Should I Take This Offer?

LOL old bike!!!! BRAND NEW! They even thrown in the faster gloss red for nothing!

Anyone else thought this? That the adventurer's front end looks like the queen in Aliens due to the screen shape?

What I meant was it's basically a 2 year old bike with very minor modifications since 2006 and due for a major upgrade probably next year.

If I can get £500 off one (in the best white/red colour) when the bike was first released and subject to a 3 month wait,I'm sure four-figure discount deals can't be too far round the corner with the recession kicking in.

DEALS ?

I went to my local dealer on the weekend, to establish the cost of trading in my 04 1200gs against a new gsa.[5k for mine and 12k for the new one] I would need to find an extra 7k for one with premium and dynamic packages, I decided to think about it.
Monday found me working in a Vauxhall main dealer, where they are selling off the outgoing 2008 Vectra demonstrator models for guess what........... yep 7K!!!!!!, they were not particually well specked and only a 1.8 motor, but a nearly new car all the same.

Makes you think dont it?

"....I also enquired about the paniers and top box. Paniers were £728 and top box was £386 = expensive for something I don't want on the bike all the time but handy though ugly! The GSAs in stock do not have the factory fit alarm - do I really need it?

The Alu panniers and top box are expensive - they are designed for rugged use; the Vario panniers are excellent and easy to get on and off and easy to extend -and they ARE waterproof. Although the top box is small is is also extendable and can of course operate with the same key as panniers and ignition;; Whatever is the point of an alarm, In France it is of no use whatsoever; A good U lock is essentail;

You can fit your varios to a new GSA, just need to get a couple brackets from your dealer, wollaston offered to fit them for free so I figure the cost is minimal.

Four figure discounts! this is getting silly. Minor modifications!
The 08 bike has a more powerful engine and esa etc etc.
As for four figure discounts. someone will be wanting one for free soon,
The dealers have to make some profit. Why do bikes get cheaper to make the older they get?

I was under the impression that ESA was a factory extra and didn't realise it now came as standard for no added extra cost.

But it's supply and demand.

IF BMW have made too many GSs and supply slows down due to the recesssion,at some point they will discount more heavily, especially if the bike is about to be superceded.

I take your point , but i cant seem to remember a time when bmw have
ever knocked chunks off new bikes. It seems to be a policy of theirs.
I have been told by my dealer that all prices are going up in January 09!
If it were honda then there would be bargains galore, imports with 2k off etc.

Just a thought, how much has the € / £ exchange rate changed over the last year? Bet it's not in our buying favour, in which case price reductions would be less likely, IMO :(

The salesman told me that the Alu panniers are easy to get on and off but how easy are they? He also told me that the extras I would need to fit the vario panniers + panniers and top box would cost over £1000 so I'd be best off keeping with the Alu panniers I guess? My preference is that with the vario panniers off there is no pannier frame on show and it makes the bike look quite sporty by comparison. I guess you can't have it all!

the alu panniers look better imo. However they tarnish pretty easily and the last set i had leaked. This may not be common as a friends are water tight.
The vario ones, again imo , are not as good. The exhaust side is next to useless. If you have a gsa then go the alu route. they come off pretty easily. they have a locked clamp at the front which once unlocked lets the panniers slide off. Plus top loading of the alu panniers is better than the side opening vario ones. Hope this helps:nenau

Easy! They slide onto what I can only describe as angled tabs on the frame (would post photos but camera battery is flat) then lock into place. Takes a few seconds per box.

I tend to leave the top box on for convenience/pillion backrest and just put the panniers on when I need them

I've decided to keep with the alu panniers because I would end up paying more for the conversion plus the dealer had already ordered & fitted the new ones so It wouldn't be a great start if I said no thanks now!

The GSA

I think you have made the right decision because the Alu panniers 'go with the bke;' Perhaps you will now be encouraged to do a grand continental trip. best of luck.

The bike is all ready to collect for next week now so I will post some pics when I get them! Many thanks for your advise!

Had the same experience this year when i wanted to trade my 1150 for a 12ADV - bought a Busa for the difference and kept the 1150 - result :bounce1

I had a estimate from my insurance broker in the last 5 weeks to add a new BMW to my current motorbike policy would only cost an extra £60. When I went back to insure the bike this week the actual cost for £200!!! Blimming call centres - they'll tell you anything!

Did you try BMW insurance - it only cost me 178n GBP to insure a 1200 ADV with no NCD.

No I didn't because it seemed logical to simply add this bike to my mid term policy. The insurance increased by £178 + admin fee = £200. Too late now as I paid for the insurance at the time but I will consider the BMW insurance next year.

I'm interested in the accessories BMW offer for this bike. I like the carbon fibre front and rear mudguards. The rear mudguard seems easy to fit only 3 bolts by the look of it but what's involved to change the front mudguard? Is it front wheel off??
