Should the rear disc be loose?

It's been a long day so this could well be a numpty question.........

I've got the back wheel off and the rear disc rattles around like a good ''un. Bolts are torqued up nicely and not going anywhere. I've never noticed this before :confused: are they all like that sir?

I know that my rear disc does not rattle. It is a snug fit on the flange. Well worth checking that your bolts are correctly seated.

If it stays still when the wheel goes round it will save you a fortune in brake pads Andres :thumb
 
Something is very wrong with your disk! It shouldn't be loose at all. Remove the bolts and check if the bolt holes are too big now due to the movement of the disk. You probably have to install a new disk and new bolts.
 
Andres if it's on the centre stand is that the only problem i.e. th ebrake disc rattling?

A friend of mines bike had the alloy carrier to the drive axle wear out and shag the FD and carrier!

Shite design!

If there's no sensible answers I'll go poke the 1200 I have out there with a big stick and see what it says

The bolts are good and tight ( won't go into the carrier any deeper) and the disc is good and loose (side to side, not axial) Its not something you can really feel with the caliper in place but once the caliper is off.....

Thanks for all the replies, Im knacked now and off to bed - fresh pair of eyes and report back tomorow :thumb2

It should be absolutely solid.

2 possibilities, firstly the alloy carrier splines as Jaythro said. Check the big circlip that holds it on is still there. If the carrier and the disk rattle it's the splines. If this is the case then you need to hope the steel splines on the crown wheel are Ok else it's going to be expensive.

It's just possible the disk has worn on the mounting bolts. I replaced my disk at about 40k and notice a v. small amount of play as the holes had v. slightly enlarged on the bolts. Given enough time the wear would only increase. No it shouldn't be possible. Has the disk ever been replaced or removed from the carrier before?
 
Had this issue with an EBC disc I fitted to my 1200rt (Same set up) There was a faulty batch where there wasn't enough material for the securing bolts to 'pinch' the disc tightly to the disc carrier.
Do you know the bike's history? It may have had one of these discs fitted in the past, sounds like the same fault.

Ah ha......................fitted an EBC disc about 7000 miles ago.................the plot thickens.

At work at the mo. but will have a proper look this evening.

Just ordered an EBC Disc from Busters for my 1200:blast

perhaps I should check if it is the right thickness before I fit it.:blast

it was only 60quid,pay cheap pay twice!!!!!
 
I fitted an EBC Disc 30,000 miles ago. Its wearing a lot better than the OEM disc that struggled to get to 15k.
