Slipping clutch that rapidly turned into loss of drive .... with no nasty noises.

Turned out the friction material had disintergrated in places.
08 Bike with 22k miles

What the friction plate looked like..

Compared to a new item.

.

Can't say for sure what caused the failure........ Buuuuut, the clutch lever bites very close to the bar ( i've bled it and it's made no difference).

All i can think of is the slave cylinder isn't operating at 100% efficiently, and when the clutch lever is pulled and should be disengaging the friction plate it's still touching the pressure plate as it spins.... hence dragging and over heating, which finally leads to it disintergrating.

And while fitting this new clutch something occured to me and got me thinking....

Out of all the 1200 models i've serviced and worked on over the years i'd say about 20% are non abs bikes.....

Now, out of all the 1200 clutches i've fitted in the same period of time i'd say 80% are on non abs bikes.....

An odd statistic that's only relevant to the 1200 models i've worked on.
The 1100/1150 models have no such abs/non abs clutch anomaly .

Very strange...

On my K bike I use Honda Moly 60 and some other 60% moly I got off Ebay - seems to do the trick. Looking at what appears to be rust on those splines I'm thinking I might take a look at mine over the winter as will be up to around 36K by then. It doesn't look like those have had any from the factory.

Anyone got advice on an engine support for when you have the back end of a 1200 off including down to the clutch?

Ive got a lovely Eazy Riser bike lift. But it uses the footrests so wont be any help when the clutch needs doing. When the time I'll probably be getting the back end frame powder coated. Its not it a really bad way but want to keep it looking good.

How very odd...

Top job Neil, thank you very much. Didn't stall it once on the way home so very happy. I'll keep an eye on the biting point for the next couple of weeks and if it doesn't change I'll swap out the slave cylinder as you advised.

Rides like a different bike.

Cheers!

People slagged off the ABS on the 11xx

Maybe then, Dr Vonn Helmut Cheese (Head of R&D, BMW Motorrad Munchen) made the clutch into a faux-slipper clutch, absorbing the negative torque from braking a bit and allowing the clutch to become a sacrificial item :nenau

It just might be the ABS prevents the wheel locking up so there is less transmission snatch when power goes back on. But that does sound like a theory grabbing at straws.
