Slipping clutch that rapidly turned into loss of drive .... with no nasty noises.
Turned out the friction material had disintergrated in places.
08 Bike with 22k miles
What the friction plate looked like..
Compared to a new item.
Old and new side by side
.
Can't say for sure what caused the failure........ Buuuuut, the clutch lever bites very close to the bar ( i've bled it and it's made no difference).
All i can think of is the slave cylinder isn't operating at 100% efficiently, and when the clutch lever is pulled and should be disengaging the friction plate it's still touching the pressure plate as it spins.... hence dragging and over heating, which finally leads to it disintergrating.
And while fitting this new clutch something occured to me and got me thinking....
Out of all the 1200 models i've serviced and worked on over the years i'd say about 20% are non abs bikes.....
Now, out of all the 1200 clutches i've fitted in the same period of time i'd say 80% are on non abs bikes.....
An odd statistic that's only relevant to the 1200 models i've worked on.
The 1100/1150 models have no such abs/non abs clutch anomaly .
Very strange...
