i believe there is a sportier sixth gear option available for the 1150 gs. any advice/comments would be appreciated. i still have time to modify my order.
I have the "overdrive" 6th on mine. It will still pull in top but not hugely well. Can be wound up to an indicated 110 mph (on the Autobahn obviously) in 5th then chucked into top and the revs drop by about 2000 rpm. However at this speed don't expect much in the way of acceleration.
I hope that works, if not do a search for "Sports Box" or similar there are other comments scattered about
FWIW:
I went for the Sports option as I don't tend to do Trans European jaunts as much as I like to just blat about. What I got back is that the drop in revs from 5th to 6th with the Overdrive box is too much unless you just want to cruise. In this country you need to keep changing. However, I'm still waiting for the bike so I can't tell you if I made the right choice
Although may people say that the longer 6th gear is good for autobahns, you may be interested to know that here in Germany, more GS's are sold with the sport gearbox than than the overdrive. Sure, it can get a little buzzy at the higher end of the rev range, but it's surprising how well the old boxer motor thrives on revs.
One thing that I haven't seen any comments on is engine braking. With the "sport" 6th, it's like hitting a brick wall when you throttle off on the motorway, you only need the brakes for emergency braking.
Comparing fuel consumption (based on the parallel thread on this subject), there is no real difference (assuming most of the posts are based on the higher 6th). My guess is that on bikes with the overdrive, you need a larger throttle opening to go anywhere, on the lower 6th, a small whiff of throttle gets you moving.
