Just moved into a house and had Sky+ installed. The engineer asked which phone point was nearest to the sky box as a lead has to be connected. When the lead is connected we cannot receive incoming phone calls (no real hardship to me but I now have a family who like to talk to people). Anyway I disonnect the lead and we can accept incoming calls. I ring sky, they send an engineer out who tests all sky equipment and says all their stuff is OK; the problem must be BT. We have three phone points, all appear to be working, two have phones connected and the other one has the sky plug lying next to it.
Does anyone know if it is likely to be a BT fault or are sky talking out of their *rses?:nenau

If you don't use the interactive features, just disconnect the sky phone cable permantently. I have for over 12months now, with no issues.

I think it only needs to be connected to notify sky of any movies etc you have watched and need to pay for. Or for interactive pay features.

Plug it in occasionally, if you need to pay for a film etc.

I know this is against sky's contract (must be plugged in at all time) and hasn't really solved the root cause :augie

But is a solution of sorts... :)

They only ask you to keep it plugged in, in the hope you click on something that is going to cost, which if you're like me, you won't need/use.

Haven't had mine plugged in for 3 years, and it's never been a problem.

Stops the boy playing the pay-as-you-go games too... :thumb

maybe faulty modem in the sky plus box:nenau

sky engineer has no way of testing the things AFAIA

but you can be sure it's skys fault:D

if you have broadband... is there a microfilter on the sky lead?

We are about to subscribe to skytalk and sky broadband, will I have to plug it in to use these facilities?

Good luck with Sky Broadband. I could enter into a serious RANT about this.

I have spent a week now waiting for their tech support to respond.

I happily used BT broadband for several years, now nothing works.

I think I know why, but the numpties on tech support just keep asking if the green light is on and can I press the reset button - and they barely speak understandable english.

Have you got a microfilter on the phone socket that Sky is connected to? (and all the other ones in use)

Yes, Microfilters everywhere. Had to use them for BT Broadband.

I have tried using the old BT ones and the new Sky ones, not that there should be any difference.

Still waiting for Tier 3 support to call back ......:spitfire

When you say 'unable to receive a call' do you mean anyone who dials you gets the engaged tone or that the ringer in the phone does not ring?
If the former and Sky have checked the box then it's likely to be the internal wiring for the extension the sky box is plugged in to. If the latter then there is a modification that some people do to improve their ADSL, which is to disconnect the ring line from the extensions. They do this at the master box so you may be able to get BT to fix that one FOC.

I have fitted micro filters and when I ring the house from my mobile it is "engaged". Disconnect the sky lead and plug in a normal handset and all is OK.

Hmm, that would put my suspicion firmly on the Sky box being the problem. If a normal handset in the same socket as the sky box does not cause the problem then, by process of elimination, where else can it lie.
Sounds like the sky engineer may have been, um, a little confused.

I was parked in big carpark in middle of Guildford, next to two Sky+ installers in their vans. They were "chatting" (i.e. shouting) from drivers' seats to each other.

Upshot of the conversation was that they weren't going to be arsed to do the last couple of calls of the day, but were going to fick off down the pub as there was some footie on.

So someone else waits in all day for nothing then.

Tells you all you need to know about the Sky/broadband indrustry.

Looks like it is the skybox - I unplugged the the lead from the bak of the box and plugged a phone into it - everything still works. The only time I cannot receive calls is when the actual box is connected to a phone line. I will call sky and see how soon I can get an engineer/replacement box. ( I am also having no success recording programs, it may be linked ).
