The day before yesterday my bike (2005 GS) was vandalised - the oil filler cap was removed (amongst other stuff) and it was kicked onto its side. As it was parked on a slight hill it ended up lying beyond horizontal on its left side in a flower bed and so most of the oil drained out. However I got it out of the flower bed, filled it up with oil, it started fine and it's running fine - it was probably lying on its side for around 15 - 20 minutes. What is puzzling me, though, is that when I had run it for a while and went to top up the oil, the inside of the filler cap (which I had found) looked like it had a white emulsified oil film. The last oil change I did was only a week or so ago (typical) and I'd done around 1,400 km since. Any ideas what might have caused that? Original oil was 15/50, couldn't get that so refilled it with 10/40.

Short stop start trips.
Common problem with most short trip vehicles.

Moisture within the crankcase has not vaporised as the engine hasn't warmed up enough over a period.

Nothing to worry about.

As above, just condensation, I've got a windowed clutch cover on my TLS you should see the state of that until the engine is up to temperature and the condensation has disappeared. Nothing to worry about it will clear.

Sounds like it gets used a fair bit - my moneys on pee in the oil

Accumilation was inside the filler cap.
The bloody bike was on its side - stop winding him up.... you tease.

Tell you what Bill - how about bookmarking this thread for next time you want to take the piss out of someone buying a locking oil filler cap?. :P

They'd need a really accurate aim to get any useful amount of wee into the engine. Just run it for a few miles and "moisture" will boil off.
I'd be more bothered about paint damage and future corrosion.

Still slightly puzzled (but not particularly worried)

I doubt it was due to short journeys - since I changed the oil in the South of France I ran up to the UK last Monday, and the bike lives in a garage here. As regards peeing, I also thought about that. However, as the bike was attacked by a woman suffering an 'episode' (nothing to do with me - I had never even met her, but she decided that the bike was 'ugly' - poor woman ended up in the cells as there is no secure psychiatric help available here - that can't help her much) I kind of ruled that out. I wondered whether petrol might have found it's way into the crankcase but then again I don't see that that would have given an 'emulsification' - would it?
Anyway, thanks for the replies -

Might have mental issues, but at least we know her eyesight is ok ;-) My old Gsxr1100 suffered a similar fate a few years ago, in France. Was she near Oradour Sur Glane I wonder!

I had an old ZX10 a few years ago, always emulsion in the oil cap. Thought head gasket, seal pump shaft passed through. Actually drained the oil in the end to check it. All was fine, put it back in and carried on. At least with an air cooled bike they can ruled out straight away but just guess some bikes just do it.

The old Yamaha Diversion 600 (air cooled style) is a booger for emulsifying it's breather tube. The fix is a fatter hose. Not that it will be any help on a BMW boxer.

Aww c'mon....the bike went right over and the cap wasn't secure, it fell out ;)

A woman suffering from 'an episode ' going for the oil cap whilst hurting a bike for being ugly? Unlikely in the extreme

Actually she had it in her pocket, along with one of the screen adjuster knobs ................. I was impressed that she'd thought to take it out prior to kicking it over!

No - petrol would just dilute the oil. They would mix not emulsify.

How did she manage to get the opil cap off. I'm not a 10st weakling but I couldnt undo it with fingers only. Thats why there is a special key in the tool kit.

I only keep it finger tight, and only changed the oil ten days or so ago
