Gents, refitting my Y-piece due to some leakage that was causing backfire. Was going to apply some copper grease, but though I'd ask first what everyone else uses? Cheers

Yes and thanks, the std can will help, but the problem I want to remedy is that the y-piece doesn't fit snugly onto the header, as indicated by a carbon trace at the join

Go to your local Exhaust fitter and see what they use.
When the instructions say 'Not Advised...ask yourself, why not?

Its because silicone is supposed to kill the Cat, as you have removed yours it wont affect you. Dont worry about special expensive silicone use a cheap £1 builder's clear silicone in a mastic gun. works wonders.

The Remus Y piece on my bike was a slightly smaller diameter that the cat outlet. I packed it out with aluminium from a old coke can wrapped round the end of the Y piece and used exhaust jointing compound to seal it.......still backfires the odd time though. I think the fuel injection fires unburnt fuel down the pipes on the overrun and these auto-ignite when the bike is ridden........enthusiastically

Doesn't silicone kill the O2 sensor? That said, for all I know you leave the O2 sensor screwed into the cat when you fit a Y-piece so same difference on a GS?

My y-piece has a sensor so that makes me wonder about using standard silicone, they ain't cheap to replace
I've slapped some copper grease on which seems to be doing the job for now but if it leaks again I'll go the silicone route.
