Slippery Anakees?

I had Tourance's on my R100GS and whilst they lasted for the best part of 9k miles I didn't think the grip was as good as the Anakee's on the 12, particularly in the wet.

I agree with the guys above, with all the crap on the roads at the moment the best tyre in the world will not give a great level of grip. The best thing is to relax and ride smoothly.

My 12GS came with the 607 Dunlops & the shop ask me if I wanted them swapped out before I took it home but I said no & I must say, even though I am a tourance user those damn dunlops kicked butt, wet or dry. My only comlaint is the rear was completely gone in 5k miles. I have a new tourance on the rear & the original front dunlop with 7k miles.

I'm well aware of the riding smooth and all that, but that means I don't get the bike to slide

Happened on my way into work again today. Coming out of a roundabout I opened her up and the rear just span up in 4th... The bike is very stable and responsive going sideways...

Must check my tyre pressures, and maybe soften the damping a bit.

All in all I was just wondering if this is a special trait of a) this tyre, or b) these sorts of tyres, or c) if I'm just riding a very torquey bike on very dirty roads...

Seems like it's option c)

Riding my Kawasaki ER-5 I've had lots of low speed front end slides in the last couple of weeks. I do believe that the road conditions are terribly slippery at the moment. Sometimes even my foot slides when stopped at junctions.

What we need is a bloody good 24 hour downpour to clean up the road a bit.

Agree! A reaally reallly good heavy rain...

But, don't advertise that you're riding an ER-5... I sometimes ride a Gilera Runner 180, which is quite a bad thing, but at least it's not an ER-5!

If you want a good honest work horse then the ER-5 cannot be beaten. It was its second birthday yesterday and it has done 35,500 trouble free miles.

I was just about to post exactly the same comment! Just come back from a client and the roads are 'orrible. My favourite stretch of road had leaf mould, mud, a nasty glassy sheen and strategically placed patches of diesel. Keeps you on your toes I suppose.

I'd argue that a Honda CB500 is better, but lets not get into that

I did have many happy years on a GPz500, very similar to an ER5, and my partner still commutes every day on hers. Very reliable machine.

We have several ER500's & GPZ500's in our club. On our ride outs (mostly North Wales) they have no problem keeping up with the pack.

The ones at the back are usually the sports bikes, particularly if it's wet!

ER-5!!!

I didn't say the 180cc-motorbike-that-looks-like-a-scooter is "better" - I just said don't advertise riding an ER-5...

But the Runner on the other hand - that's a fun-fun-fun thing to ride... It tops out at about 85mph... and with those shopping-trolley-wheels, it makes things very entertaining...

Not to mention outdragging boy-racers off traffic lights

I second that notion. Where is the damned rain?!? It is December after all. Isn't an English winter meant to be at least as wet as an English summer? I can't even remember last time it rained.

Oh well, a nice slippery ride home in the dark tonight.

Be careful out there chaps and chapesses. On my usual road to and from work I've seen accidents every day for the last 3 days!

It's that time of the year. The roads are very slippery. I ride various bikes and they all feel a bit skittish at the moment. My daughter's school bus ended up in a ditch last week. I wouldn't blame the Anakee tyres too hastily although big trailie tyres will never perform quite as well as true road rubber. I only have a problem on wet overbanding on my Anakees so I ride around it where possible. I am still getting plenty of heat into the tyres even when they are wet. You can get Bridgestone 020's for the R1200GS now and if you have no intention of going off-road they may give you more confidence in the wet.

Personally, I think that if you change the tyres to another brand you are still going to find the roads pretty greasy at the moment and should take care until we have a good downpour which should clean the tarmac up a bit. The only other option I can think of is to follow a road sweeper and hope he's going your way!

Has anybody tried the Scorpion Syncs on the 1200 GS yet. They are really a road only tyre & I would like to know how they compare with the 020's. They are standard fitment on the Multistrada & always get rave revues. I think KTM are also putting them on one of their new road bikes.
