Slow Win 7 notebook -any ideas?

My Samsung N145+ notebook running Win 7 seems to be running like it's in cold treacle.... slow to start up slow to do just about everything. I've run CCleaner and Malwarebytes and removed everything I can from start up but it hasn't made any difference. Any ideas what I can do to bring the za za zoom back to this little baby? It's my 3 year old travelling companion so doesn't get used all that often but as it is now is almost unuseable

Running:
Avast antivirus which I am about to uninstall and reinstall.
Dropbox which I am going to uninstall and use web portal instead
No Norton or Macafee installed

Unisntalling and reinstalling Avast seems to have helped quite a bit...

Intel Atom cpu it will never be fast unfortunatly

You could try changing to a 2gb stick of ram if you have not done so already.

I'm in a very similar situation with my Asus Netbook...

It runs Win XP, and it's glacial...

Install Ubuntu on it and it will run much faster. Ubuntu comes with libre office pre installed. Any other software you need can usually be downloaded and installed from the software centre. http://www.ubuntu.com/

You can run a live version of ubuntu from a dvd or usb stick to try it out before installing. Ubuntu can be a stand alone install or installed alongside windows with the option to boot into either system at start up.

After 3 years........
Stick as much RAM in as you can.
Completely reinstall the op system from scratch.
Only install the things you use.

Getting rid of the hibernation file (hiber.sys) can also help speed things up. It takes some 4gb of your C: partition... who uses hibernate anyway

Open a DOS window, (command prompt) and enter the command:

powercfg –h off

That's it. Re-boot and see if it helps.

To reinstate:

powercfg –h on

Also an idea to run task manager (start > run > type "tskmgr.exe") and see what processes are running and what resources are being used. Some programs can behave oddly (the newest Spybot S&D version active processes used most of the CPU on my little netbook..)
