Small hole mystery

We need to talk . Can I send you a pm? I would like to check your vin number with mine. Maybe the same slave worker sabotaged the engine.
I didn't notice any hole or foam. Where exactly is the hole?

Half way up the engine, just below that strengthening web at the bottom of the left barrel, looks like it goes into the clutch housing.??:nenau

Couldn't be something to do with the "over pressurisation" problem which surfaced just before the L.C. was released for sale could it ?.

Just seen it while washing the bike for the first time, looks like its a crank case breather.

Just a hole. No foam protruding from mine. Something not seated right inside yours?

I believe that's the breather for the coolant, are you sure it's oil and not coolant?
You may need a seal replaced.

It is oil for sure! As it brown and sticky :augie

Zultan the reason my bike failed after 59 miles was the back brake caught fire!:blast but yes PM me.

Good old reliable BMW:nenau

Thank you for the replies.:thumb2 Lets see what the dealer has to say tomorrow!

Ive just checked my pics in a showroom and the bike definitely has a hole, but definition not clear enough to see if any foam is present.

be nice to know

Cheers Terry:beerjug:

According to the parts fiche, it is a "foam insert". Item 4 in the piccie, Part number 11 11 8 546 228.
Absolutely none the wiser what it does though. Dribble oil in some cases, it would seem. Fall out in others.

Whatever it's purpose it does look like a bit of an afterthought and could be an ideal situation to initiate paint system failure. (to keep up with the BMW tradition as superbly demonstrated on the Hex Head front engine covers).

It does look like a weep hole for the water pump seal. I know for sure ktm enduro bikes have that system. If seal fails then the excess water or oil can dribble out so as they don't mix. It's like 2 seals back too back. One on the water side and one on the oil side. With the weep hole out the middle.

The old K series bikes had a "hole" in the engine case that lead from the oil/water pump unit (same pump for the oil and water, the two fluids were seperated by a seal).

So if the coolant or oil seals leaked the resultant fluids would leak out through the hole and not cause contamination between the oil and water.

So perhaps the hole mentioned works along the same lines.

I took it to the dealers today!

You are correct it sounds like that it is the same system. They did say BMW had told them on the course that if the seal went it would dump loads of oil.
so it does look like a pressurisation problem! :blast as it has forced the foam filter out and is weeping!:(

So it is booked in on saturday for them to look at next week! :nenau
