SMELL OF HOT OIL?!!



Can some one point me towards a thread on the above subject please, there is sure to be one.

I have had the bike from new, its just over a thousand miles and it has had its first service at Wollaston, very efficient too.

The thing is from day one I have this nauseating smell of hot oil, noticeable when in traffic particularly, its not smoking- leaking any where-or burning oil that I notice.

Just the breather on a new engine perhaps?
I have noticed the faster you go the less you are to smell it so the Triple Black nutter flashing by is me.

A few pointers please gratefully received.

Like you, I was concerned at the smell of hot oil when I first got mine (GSA TC in 2011). I
drew it to the attention of the dealer at first service and they said it was quite common
and not to worry about it.

I stopped noticing it a few weeks later. Bike has never leaked oil and doesn't appear to
be using any now.

If you have just had a service it is most likely to be the smell of engine oil which dripped somewhere during the service. Although the mechanic would have wiped it clean it will still gather around the folds of your exhaust and other hot nooks and crannies. Mine smelt strongly of oil a few weeks ago after it's service and although I could not see any oil I'm sure this was the source. After a few days the smell reduced and after a wash it had gone.

It's residual oil from the oil filter housing. It's impossible to clean it all off after the filter change.

If the mechanic did the right thing and pre filled the oil filter, it's more likely that a little got spilled. He could have fitted it dry but then the engine gets no oil while the filter fills. It's not a huge issue but such things will add up over the years.

Mine used to smell when hot and in traffic - don't notice it so much now though but it has been a bit parky in the main.

Wollastons serviced mine and didn't clean the oil off the cylinder heads.
It splashed all over the legs of my new twat suit.
made a right mess that wouldn't wash out.
They were good enough to accept responsibility though and gave me a new pair of trousers.

Mine's done 1250 miles from new & I've noticed the same thing in warm weather, particularly in slow moving traffic.

Wollaston's serviced mine and, after I rode home, I noticed a small puddle of oil under the engine. The oil filter was not even finger tight (as in I could turn it by simply pushing it round with the tip of one finger)...

Mistakes happen and normally hand tight is more than enough for an oil filter. But the GS oil filter is so shrouded the only sure way to fit it is with a suitable socket spanner.

Mine wasn't even hand tight - I could push it round with the tip of one finger.

I get the smell all the time when in slow traffic or when stopped. This is on my 2011 bike and it is nearly 5k since the last oil change so any spillage would have burnt off long ago. I also got it on my 2008 bike but it was always more noticeable after a service but carried on less so between services. I have never worried about it as there is no oil usage or spillage that I can see. I have never been able to trace the smell. It will also be there after I have washed the bike (not often!!) and then ridden. So who knows?????
