smoking

Some on here will know that I smoked a pipe and the occasional cigar - well I packed it in at New Years (first time in my life that a resolution has actually worked :augie) because I was inhaling it and all the wheezing and rattling at night began to seriously worry me. I chomped on the gum in times of crisis (frequent at first, got better after 2 months) and everything was going OK until Saturday night.

Working at an angling show and staying over with the group, got rat-arsed and bought a packet of Hamlet. On Sunday morning I felt like shit (and it wasn't just the surfeit of Jameson's), found one Hamlet left in the 5-pack and immediately chucked it. I have to say that I thought I would be hooked again but find that I am OK about it and even more resolved not to go back down that road again.

Not sure if I should re-set my Quit Keeper which says I've saved £146.16 on baccy since I Jan. Maybe if I just deduct the £4.50 for the Hamlet.......:augie

"Day one in the cig-free Hoos"

I sat up till one this morning finishing off my last pack of Drum that I bought on the ferry back from Holland at Easter.

The pharmacist yesterday was very good, lots of positive advice and a 'scrip' for patches.

Here goes...

As one who supplied the last decent cigar, I said decent, cigar the Raider smoked, I am pleased to report that I have not smoked anything since New Year's Eve.

Still getting the feeling, esp after evening meal, that a drag would be lovely but have so far managed to see sense.

Thing I notice most, in queues etc, is how smokers stink, really awful. I would not like to go back to smelling like that.

Stay off, Arthur :aidan

gave up last august but i could do with a fag tonight ,and stuff the consiquences to health and pocket, what do other ex smokers do to pass the time away from now not smoking apart from getting larger from scoffing anything in the house:blast:toungincheek

i gave up 11 yrs ago what helped me was sugar free mints from boots but watch out the mints become addictive :blast

Stopped last year for three months.
Gained 13 kilos.

Started smoking again thinking that would help me stop getting fatter.
Now I smoke again and gained another 5.

Considering to stop smoking again before this summer.
I'll become a whale.

BTW the "brush you teeth" trick works.

Try : http://www.allencarrseasywaytostopsmoking.co.uk/

Did this 5 years ago a 20 year 20+ a day smoker ,Never looked back.
Could not get my head round the NLP stuff but had no bad reactions-moods nothing.

Never Quit Quitting

Trying to quit here...I keep saying that. SWIMBO smokes like a chimney (Dutch). We tried together after New Year and it lasted about a week - She decided that "if it wasnt for cigarettes.... life was boring".
Sooo...I started again with her.

I want to Quit...but I figure if I do quit...Ill have to find anotjher G/F. She will never quit.

Any advice?

My girlfriend gave up last May (diagnosed with pneumonia, then leukaemia ) and at the time I promised I'd smoke outside the house. Nearly a year later, I'm fed up of standing in the back garden in all weathers so...

If she loves ya, suggest that as a way forward? Define the house as smoke free but don't nag her about smoking per se ;)

After being a smoker for 19 years, I quite nearly two years ago. It was quite hard at first, and man, I can not deny gaining a kilo or ten.

I found having a box of sugar free pastilles and drinking a lot of water helps with the craving.

When it comes to having something to do, well, why not go for a walk or take a ride on your bike? One is healthy and the other lots of fun :) Trick is to distract the brain from thinking of the cigarette. It's all in the head you know..

Do not fall for the temptation trying a cigarette. I know I would have fallen right in the trap again if I did :rob

I quit twelve years ago got a weeks worth of patches feckin things made me ill so i binned them and did it cold turkey i am reliably informed i was a right miserable barsteward but the one thing i learned is you will stop smoking when you set your mind to do so,occasonally i could start again but like someone else said cleaning your teeth helps but willpower gets you through it
good luck

Have a go at using Quitkeeper . It's a little program that helps you manage one day at a time and helps you look at the next milestone to having stopped . I found it quite motivating to use as each day when I went on the PC it popped up and reminded me how long I had stopped, how much money I saved, how much longer I might live.... and how far to go to reach the next milestone of all these stats. http://www.dedicateddesigns.com/qk/

Giving up smoking is hard, and what people don't understand is needing to give up has nothing to do with it. It's all about wanting to give up.

When I was working on the dust carts I smoked 10 to 13 a day so I gave my mate my packet with strict instructions to offer me one every hour, which he did like clockwork. Part two of the intructions was to only allow me one per hour, so if I didn't have one between 9 and 10am I didn't get two from 10 to 11am. When we were on the way to the tip I'd allow myself one, and at the end of the day I would leave my fags at work so I couldn't smoke at home. I carried on this way for three weeks and cut down to three a day, but then I got moved on to a different crew and it went out the window.

I started again by rationing myself which worked but not as succesfully as before, as I would have my one per hour so only managed to cut down to 7 a day. Now I'm out on the rigs with a 12 hour shift and no work to do I'm up to 20 a day :(

One trick I have found is keeping a packet of Fisherman's Friends with me and alternating a cigarette and a sweet.

Allen Carr's EasyWay

No.,..not the camp comedian before anyone asks.

I read Allen Carr's EasyWay to Stop Smoking in one day, August Bank Holiday 2004, and haven't smoked since.

I smoked 20 Marlboro reds a day for 24 years up til then.

Apart from a few middle aged pounds, I am no heavier than I was when I quit in '04. In fact, this year, at 46, I joined British Military Fitness and now feel phiscally fitter than I did in my 20's because I am not "fagged out"!

Carr teaches you that you do not "give up", rather "break the link".
Once you see how the tobacco inudstry has conned you for 20 odd years, and how you have been brainwashed into thinking you are actually enjoying breathing in toxic shit 20 times a day, you get angry and get rid of those little white chains that bind you to a revolving door of love it-hate it-give up-oh go on then, one won;t hurt-addicted again cycle.

And before any smart arse posts a "he died of lung cancer" post,. yes he did, regretting that it took him all those years of denying that it wasn't affecting him and those around him, and that it took him so long to write the book.

It worked for me !:aidan

Crap song

One day at a time..... Awful dire dire tune from 1970 o'clock but just stopping one day at a time worked for me. I had the patches as a safety net (gave me some wild dreams, Mrs Farmer was smiling for weeks). Been off em for 5 years now hooorah :bounce1:bounce1:bounce1

No matter how tempted you are to go back to it please dont the government nicks enough of your money from your back pocket with out you handing it over a counter to them. Ring a mate, brush your teeth (it does work I agree) watch porn do some thing but dont get back on the tabs. Think better blood flow lower blood pressure better wood, gotta make ya happy :roll:roll:pullface

Any one getting their life back from tabs good luck to you

First Day Of Day One.

Well, I'm at home now after going all day without a smoke: That's 05:30 hrs, when I get up, to now, when I get home.

Guess what, I'm twitching but coping, and am going to ignore it because the house smells like an ashtray and I don't want that any more. Did I only notice that today?

A patch and three chewy's have provide the today's crashmat, I think, so here's looking forward to day two being successful.

Good luck to all involved right now.
