Quite. :thumb2 The valve will balance the external and internal pressures. It will help with condensation in some circumstances but if you close the panniers in warm moist air and travel to a colder area, you'll get condensation inside the pannier and the valve won't be active unless the pressure changes, too.
 
Er, I beg to differ. There is less air pressure at altitude. So any vacuum effect in the boxes would have been when you'd closed the lid at height and then found you had difficulty opening at sea level or lower. Due to the increasing air pressure as you descend.

that is the correct answer.

my original, non scratchy bolt panniers and top box used to be un openable without tools after descending mountain passes if opened at the top.

i just drilled a tiny hole in the bottom and the problem went away. never scratched my helmet either :D

If you did it the other way around, surely they would explode. And that pointy bolt thing would get flung out and kill someone... :green gri

I wish I'd have thought of the hole fix before I spent all that money on a hyperbaric chamber to solve the problem.
 
My GSA top box also has bolt heads showing in it, so I got some sheets of self adhesive foam from the production line of the company I work for and lined the thing. If you want some foam drop me a pm and ill 'acquire' some for you, I don't want you to go hurting yourself using sharp tools trying to make the bolt head smoother.

Nature avoided this potential problem for me by making my head to big to be able to get my Shoei in & close the lid.
