I think it kicks in next week. Fellas, be mindful Traffico will be out in force after some revenue.:(

MADRID (AP) — Spain will lower highway speed limits, cut train ticket prices and use more biofuel under an emergency energy-saving initiative because of soaring oil prices brought on by unrest in Libya, an official said Friday.

The Libyan rebellion has sharply reduced exports from the oil-rich nation, and about 13 percent of the oil Spain consumes comes from Libya.

Deputy Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba said Spain's energy supply is not in danger, despite shutdowns by oil companies operating in Libya, but the national energy bill will rise significantly because of the sharply higher petroleum prices.

He said a euro10/per barrel ($1.37 per barrel) increase in oil prices will cost Spain an extra euro500 million ($690 million) per month.

"This is what happens when we depend so much on oil. It is normal that the price goes up when there are problems," said 28 year-old student Pablo Regadera.

Spain's energy saving measures will be approved formally next week and take effect on a temporary basis March 7.

The maximum speed limit on Spanish highways is 120 kilometers per hour (75 mph) and this will come down to 110 kph (68 mph). The government will rush to print new signs to alert people of the change.

"We are going to go a bit slower and in exchange for that we are going to consume less gasoline and therefore pay less money," Perez Rubalcaba said. For instance, he said, a car running on gasoline will use 15 percent less fuel at the new, lower speed limit.

Madrid taxi driver Carlos Cuellar Benito, 47, doubted the measure would make any difference. "I think that it is nonsense. A change of 10 kilometers an hour is not going to save anything, it is not logical."

The government also will order a 5 percent reduction in fares on commuter and middle-distance trains by the state railway system RENFE.

"We are going to wage a major campaign to promote public transport, which is always welcome but which in this case is absolutely necessary for us," he said.

Finally, oil companies will also have to add more bio-fuel to the gasoline and diesel they produce — from the current mandatory 5.8 percent proportion, up to 7 percent, the deputy prime minister said.

Sounds like a very sensible idea to me.

interesting

I worked on a vehicle last week which had been run on a high mix of diesel and bio diesel, unsure of the ratio, but in this country we run 5% i believe.
The bio-diesel had destroyed the seals in the diesel pump, causing diesel to leak into the sump, as the pump is lubricated by engine oil.
There was no visible external leak at this point, more like internal bleeding.
The sump then gradually filled up.
Next thing that happened was the oil was so diluted by the bio-diesel that it had virtually no lubricity at all, and threw about 15 litres of black crap all over the road, with a con rod in hot pursuit leaping out of the hole in the block which it thus made ..
upping the ratios hmmmm
should be funny..:augie
re the speed reduction, ive now reduced my cruising speed to 70 from 80, no real difference really apart from 4 extra mpg, now doing 50 mpg, you get there a few minutes later.

Its back to the future.. 1973 :D

We even had ration books issued for petrol :augie remember it well and the petrol refinery blockade in 2000 does not match up to 1973.

It's a bit scary when the fuel/oil levels get so high in the sump the engine starts to 'run on', that concentrates the mind if your driving along:eek:

Interesting, I heard something about this on Radio4 on the way home late saturday night.
The report seemed to suggest it was something to do with issues in north Africa and middle east and helping save our fuel reserves....

Ive reduced my speed to 60 mph on the motorway now anyway mpg has gone up but bloody hell its slow and everything overtakes me and gives me a funny look, wont be doing on the bike though.:D

It's not the fuel, it's the type of engine the fuel is used in - Copied from a post in the car section....

Some advice on Good and bad diesel engines. And what goes wrong.

I really should think before I post...

The bit about the report on radio4 that caught my attention was tthe suggestion that it wasn't just Spain considering lowering limits... and that we all might start seeing them.

the 70s speed drop on motorways was to 50:mmmm

interesting article the other day about raisng the speed limit so industry can travel faster

Yes, speed limits are down to 110kph from the 7th, almost all 120 signs have been changed to 110 down south.

Same here, nipped on the A7 this morning, all the 120kph signs now have a magnetic 110 on em, magnetic I say :green gri
