Hiya guys anyone with a worn clutch ever experienced a whirring noise coming from I think the clutch area.I read somewhere once the clutch is totally fecked you can get such noise from the flywheel.?anyone.cheers

I had a whirring sort of noise shortly before my box expired. Fingers crossed that isn`t the case with yours!

Sounds a little fast to be box.its hard to hear till you hit 3-4000rpm. .then whatever it is it sounds like its spinning the same speed has the revs

Hi

Mark Shelley was the noise that you heard in all gears and at all revs or only under particular conditions. Did you notice anything else to warn you that the gearbox was about to go i.e the colour of the oil etc

Regards

Mike

Were there any other symptoms before that box expired? For example mine rattles in neutral but not with clutch lever pulled in? Im told its probably the clutch pushrod but...

My bike is a 97 1100 and it had covered 86K when the box expired.
There was a background whirring noise which went from being barely audible at first to a noticeable whir/odd rumble over a thousand miles or so. Just before it expired, for about 15 miles it was a really loud whir/mashing sound. By that time I kind of knew what was happening so I had booked it in to get it fixed and rather thoughtfully I lost all drive literally 50 yards from Cambridge Motorcycles :)

Does it do it at those revs in neutral or only in drive?
(the latter points more towards a drivetrain problem)

Does it do it more under load (EG going up a slight hill) but less at the same revs coming down the hill (not under load) ?

You just know by the sparse and vague information being drip fed by the OP that this thread is going to turn into a teeth pulling exercise.

Can i join in........

What model of bike is it ?

What is the mileage ?

What have you done so far trying to locate the noise ? ( i ask as you happened to say, and only by someone mentioning "starter motor", that you've already had the starter motor off).

How long has it been making this worrying noise ?

. :D

Sorry guys steptoes cock on,I should have stated the bikes a 98 1100.78k on clocks.all I've done to locate the noise is strip the s/motor which was sticking before I stripped and freed it up.id say the whining noise is too fast to be gearbox or drive line.I read somewhere, may have been adventure bike rider, someone had the same issue which turned out to be clutch related, something to do with the flywheel?guys thanks for your help, its good to be back on a GS again.anyone want to buy a hayabusa;)
