Speedo's stopped working

Riding to work this morning on my 1150GS I noticed the speedo wasn't working. I disconnected the cable at the wheel end, spun the front wheel and the peg that drives the cable wasn't turning. I wiggled it with some pliers and it started turning but as soon as some pressure is applied, eg pushing the cable back on, it stops. Is the drive in the front wheel serviceable or will I need to replace it? I replaced the front tyre about 1000 miles ago so it's possible I disrupted something then.

I think the simplest answer is to whip the wheel off (well enough to get the speedo drive out) and see if the output drive turns when the two lugs that engage the wheel hub are turned.

I don't think that you can service the drive other than pack it with grease.

If I do need a replacement drive I think I'll go for one with a lower ratio, to compensate for the speedo error. I've done bit of research on here and apparently the drive from an 1100R does the job.

Either I bought the wrong one, or it's not quite as straight forward a swap as I thought.

I did that and ended-up returning it, living with the error and relying on my SatNav speed readout.

... the RT brought my 1100 speedo error down to acceptable limits (about 2-3mph). If you phone Motorworks they'll send you the right bit

When I got in last night I dropped the front wheel out and had a look at the speedo drive. It appeared to be undamaged but didn't seem to engage with the tangs (is that the right word?) on the wheel behind the seal. I got a screw driver and levered the ring with the tangs out slightly, regreased everything and put it back together. I only went up and down the road to try it but, fingers crossed, the speedo is working again

Maybe when I had the wheel out to fit a new tyre a while back I accidentally bent the ring on the wheel in slightly
