My '05 1150ADV seems to have a kind of plastic coating on the final drive spline.
I guess its a good idea in theory but it has distorted making it almost impossible to get it to fit back into the shaft.

It seems impervious to filing and even a Stanley knife hardly touches it.

I assume this must be a common problem but it was not on my 2001 GS or either of my 1100s's

I am thinking of burning it off :nenau

not a very good picture but the shiny bits are metal, dark is the coating

It's not likely to be plastic, but could be grease residue, that has hardened?

There isn't any coating I can think of, other than Hardox, Casenite or Nitriding that would be beneficial to the steel.

See if it will remove using a knife point, followed with wire-brushing?

It could be some kind of phosphate finish ( or a new greener version ) which reduces corrosion, it used to be common place on automotive parts, where corrosion could cause an issue.its normally etched a few microns deep into the parent metal
if the spline is distorted its almost certainly needs a new shaft

I have just cut a slice of it off and it does feel plastic.
You can bend it and its approx 0.2mm thick (0.008") on the plain shank before the splines start.

Sounds like it is the soft plastic (dark brown)coating that tools, injector nozzles and machined parts are dipped in after coating the item in oil. It stops mechanical and chemical damage to machined surfaces in transit/storage.

It should all have been removed prior to assembly of the shaft. You should take it all off - it serves no purpose now.

If it fitted well before its gonna be a bit slack if you remove the coating, i'd think long and hard before removing it.:nenau

It's only on the plain shaft - it can only break up and contaminate the lubrication on the shaft splines.

Ohh er
its sounds like the stuff blackal mentions used to protect 'bright metal' before fitting so should have been removed

burn't and scraped off the first 10mm of the stuff three times and eventually it slid in.
Just hope its easier next time:thumb
