I have a year 2000 GS1150. I call it Daffy, then wonder about people who name their bikes. Sigh.

Anyway, when I bought it (recently) it has Hella spots fitted. They are 55w each. They are wired so that when the high beam is on, the spots are on. There is no way to have the high beam on without the spots.

I recently had the 40000 km service done (24000 miles, I think) at a cost of $NZ590. That's about 225 pounds, and from what I read it's cheap.

The mechanic is Motorad trained, and he cringed at the way the spots are wired. He says it means far too much current through the switch, having the spots switched through the BMW switch.

I have disconnected the power to the spots until I can sort out the correct way to do this.

I read a thing on Nippy Normans site that says I can switch the spots off using the indicator cancel switch, and that sounds so much better than fitting a separate switch.

Anyway, here is what I want to know.

1. Is it too much for the BMW switch set to have spots wired direct to the headlight switch?

2. If not, how can I wire it through the indicator cancel switch? The Nippy Normans item costs 16 quid, but the postage to here (New Zealand) is 20 quid, and that grates a little. If I can solve the problem locally that's a better option for me.

3. Should I be looking at the relay setup the mechanic mentioned? I have limited electircal skills, and I don't want to play with the wiring loom without really knowing what I'm doing.

Let me have your views on this. Thanks all. All Blacks versus England this weekend, keep an eye on the telly.:beerjug:

You should power the spots through a relay. Run power from the battery (or your fuse box if you use one) through the relay and switch the relay off a lead from the high-beam switch. Doing that will limit the switch to seeing low power, while the high-amp power will run through the relay which can handle it.

As far as the turn cancel switch you're talking about, that's the AutoSwitch. A very handy device if you like it. I had one but removed it because I prefer to work from a "traditional" switch. Nippy's has them.

Good luck.
