I have just changed the front brake pads on my 1150, and now they squeak like crazy. I thought it would stop after a few miles but it has not.
Its driving me nuts!
The pads are not BMW ones, I cant recall the make but they are not a very well known brand. Braking is fine but it's just the squeaking...
I did a search on this fourm and someone said to use some copper grease on the back of the pads, caliper side. Does this work?
Anybody have any other ideas?

Tia,

Pat.

What make of pads are they Pat (out of curiosity) I found Ferodo pads quite bad for this and replaced them with OE

Yes it does work, in fact it's just about essential.

I just changed mine (1100, Ferodo Platinum pads) - no squeal.

Mine weren’t Ferodo Platinum, I couldn’t afford them...

Easy, junk the pads, fit OE.

I never cut corners on pads, BMW pads might be dearer, but they do the job!

As already mentioned the use of lubrication behind the pads is essential, a smear of copper slip (or silicone grease) is all that is required, all pads will squeal without it.

Over the years I’ve had pad de-lamination, squeaking and clicking all with none OE pads; I buy OE now and don’t have problems with the pads.

squeaking brakes

I had the same problem on my 04 GSA 1150. Turned out it was a wee field mouse that had made its home in my calipers. Wouldn't have happened if I had left the cat in place.

Hat, Coat.

Don't make me laugh OE pads de-laminate. I've had lots of OE sets where the friction material falls off the backing plate as you remove them to change.

Who makes the OE ones?

And would they work out cheaper from the BM dealer, or local motor factors? I think I can guess the answer to that one :augie

Brake Bling

i'm pretty sure they are brembo, who make the calipers.

Mine were Brembo until last week (now Ferodo Platinum from Steptoe, not had chance to test) rear broken in two & delaminated front begining to crumble on cross cuts, no complaints @13,000mls, no idea of the cost of replacement OE ???? Platinum just sounds sexier than nondescript brown stuff innit.

The pads I had delaminate on me were Ferodo, quite a while back on an Airhead.

This is what I wrote about pads back in 05,

“After trying EBC pads that rattled (no anti rattle clips) and Ferodo pads that squealed during low speed braking, I went for OE Textar pads, again from Motobins. I'll see how they go.”

They went just fine.

The rear pads on my 11 were changed , the stuff was hanging off the pad and was missing a section on the end , lucky i had a rear set in bits box . They were OM ,these are copies no squel .

The last set I replaced on my bike fell apart when removing them too, I could not tell what make they were, probably a little cooked due to it all being sticky with road salt, I am making the strip clean and grease an annual job now.

Thanks for all the advice guys,

I have just gotten hold of some coppa slip and will apply some tomorrow when I'm off work. Ill let ye know if the squealing stops. I hope it will as it is driving me mad...
