stanchion tops

Hello,Ive just bought a 1200,and thoght the front end felt a little loose.Should there be any play in the crimped in alloy stanchion caps?
Mine are loose and absorb some steering effort before the forks move.

I think I understand what you mean.............there is absolutly no play anywhere on mine, just been and checked. Yours doesn't sound right to me

Have you checked the fork pinch bolts (see 'sticky' at the top of this section)?

Whoa......steady on guys.......

There HAS to be movement where the top of the fork meets the topyoke.....

As long as the bottom yoke pinch bolts and the spindle/pinch bolt is tight there is no problem.

The reason the fork has to 'hinge' on the topyoke is because the front telelever is fixed in length so as the suspension is compressed the front wheel moves forward very slightly.

The only cause for concern would be if the rubber bushes up there are worn, split or perished......if in doubt get a dealer to take a quick look.....

spherical pairs

Thanks Dutch,great explaination.love the bit about the spherical pairs.
I understand the stanchions must pivot slightly at the top yoke,hence the rubber bushes,but should the actual fork tops(top nuts if normal telescopic forks) be loose in the stanchions?
there appears to be no method of tightening these and mine are loose.

Doesn't sound quite right......better get a dealer to take a look......it'll cost nothing 'till they get their spanners out....
