star topped bolts

is it just me or are these Torx bolts sh*te? if i have to do anything on my bike involving Torx bolts (ie cat removal) - they WILL shear, almost like they're actually designed to!

what was wrong with normal allen bolts moan moan moan?!

Halfords do a nifty and well priced range of individual size TORX socket set type from their professional range 1/2" drive. I looked at what was in the tool kit and mentioned in the service manual and got myself all the relevant sizes - while I was at it I bought the allen head sockets needed for the bike as well.
Well worth it and lifetime guarantee.

If you're shearing them it could be the result of the thread locking (Locktite) material BMW seems to dip the bike in before they put any fasteners in or on.

TORX heads are supposed to offer the advantage of being able to apply sufficient torque without stripping the fastener. This is also supposed to reduce worker fatigue - and with the unions in Germany being what they are - there is probably a law that manufacturers have to use them.

torx tools are also excellent for belting into rounded out hex drive cap screws :D

ps. if bmw used the correct grade of loctite, it would actually stop them seizing as it prevents corrosion.

bolts....

Did see item on ebay that supplied high quality bolts to replace those on the GS.(BMW R1150GS HUGE Stainless Steel Fastener Kit)item number 244284203.

Not just you mate, but unless you've had an RT you dunno what a TORX problem is!:shoot:

Try taking an old AppleMac to bits, the torx driver need an extra long shank to reach into the case and I've yet to find one small enough to use on my iBook.
