Hi
Could someone recommend a good timing light . Immediate use intended on an airhead.

Is there a method for static timing an airhead?

Thanks
David

Spark plug resting on the head, with the ignition on, bike in gear, turn the engine over with the rear wheel, the spark plug will spark when the engine reaches TDC - stop turning when it sparks.

Look in the timing hole to check where the TDC mark lines up

Turn the ignition unit to adjust, if needed.

Errr...don`t fink so Steppers.

Yer don`t want it to fire at TDC.

It should fire before TDC.

Like at the 'S' timing mark.

Thats what i meant - Don't want to make it to easy, he's got do some thinking for himself :augie

Plus he has to find out what is "his" bikes timing mark. it may not be the "S", but could be any of the three other lines alongside the "S". But if it's twin sparked, then it'll be none of those ??

Now i'm no expert on airheads, but unless its been machined to take a 2nd plug i didn't think they were "twin sparked".
Not even sure if they have points or electronic ignition.
I'm sure you will correct me if i'm showing my ignorance.

If you do need a timing light for regular (ish) use I can deffinately recomend snapon's digital tacho one. I bought one about 10 years ago and it's superb. Not cheap but it's really easy to use and with a built in tacho it's easy to make sure the tickover is set right too. cost about £100 IIRC but miles better than any of the types with the wanky flickering prism.

seconded, but they're a long way from £100.

digital advance is useful too.

Bl**dy Hell!

Just looked on the website..... £325. I don't remember paying that much. I was only on about £120 a week at the time as well.
