I have just been recovered from a work bike trip after finding my 03 1150GSA wouldn't start this morning, no whirr of fuel pump and hence no start. I had a very efficient recovery home (Carole nash) but to my suprise - and annoyance on getting the bike off the van I tried to start it again and there was the whirr and it started. The chap at the bike shop - JMS said he's seen this before - the fuel pump sticks and the van ride freed it up!! great - is this a famliar tale?? can I rectify this?? will a new pump be any better?? all very frustrating and caused lots of hassle!

Does anyone have a solution or experience of this problem?

cheers:confused:

Never heard of the actual pump sticking.
The usual problem is the 4 pin connector supplying the volts to the pump and fuel indicator.Cleaning the connections usually works.
Welcome to the site BTW.:beerjug:

fuel pumps

Yes this can happen, the man hiomself will be along soon but in Roumania earlier this year the puimp went, had it out and a local auto electrican gave it a wack and low and behold it worked!. kept going for about 100 miles and then back to square one. So don't rely on it get a new one.
Dave ( I hate christmas) GS. Roll on 2010.

Thanks for all your prompt help - looks like it will be a new pump soon and a general clean up of contacts.

On the topp of the fuel pump there is a small silver strip, this, it appears is a kind of pressure release. When I had the pump out in Romania, the guy did, as daveGS rightly describes, gave it a whack, prodded the silver release bit, connected up 12v, and a miracle occurred- it spurted petrol all over me and the screen !
Replaced "fixed" pump, as spare had not arrived from Motorworks, and sure enough it worked, but failed again , this time terminally, after about 500 miles ( in Bulgaria this time). Was replaced by a pattern Bulgarian pump, which this time lasted another 2-3000 miles back to UK, and then gave up the ghost near Huntingdon.

It has now been replace, along with new filter and jubilee clips.

So far ..... I daren't say it ...so far .......:augie

Put it this way, I'll be taking a spare to Norway this summer.:thumb2

Hmm. Chears Roger. I knew if I waited long enough, the Bulgarian story would emerge! One to dine-out on in years to come. Petrol on the screan's a bummer, though.
Anyway, hopefully lightning won't strike twice and all that!

Fuel pump

Hello there,

I had the very same thing with my 1150 and it turned out to be the fuel pump relay was on the way out.

I had the same intermittant operation of the fuel pump and then it just died completely.
I swapped over the relays, (im pretty sure the horn relay and fuel pump relay are the same p/n) and it started first time. That was over 6 months ago!

I took apart the origional relay and sure enough the contacts were not making.

Just to make sure the relay is ok first, its a lot easier to change!!

Pat.

Hi Pat, that's useful info and easier than taking the wretched pump out. However, if the pump is already out, then easy to check with 12v across the terminals on the pump.

Wonder if the horn and fuel relays are the same ? - that'd be handy.

Only final comment re fuel pumps , is that if the bike has been standing for a long period and has managed to get water in the fuel (blocked overflow?), then fuel pumps dont like water up 'em, apparently. This can cause failure etc.

Very very final thing -don't buy a Romanian fuel pump.....:(

Sticking fuel pump

Just in case you haven't stripped yet, I had similar problem on my 2000 850GS.
Luckily turned out to be broken wire under ignition switch.
If you touched the handlebars slightly, pump would sound. So I waggled the wire and all good. soldered it, all done. You can replace this short bit of loom.
Give it a waggle whilst turning ignition on and off see if pump whirrs
