I’m looking at getting a fuel pump for my 2012 twin cam, looking on eBay the ones listed only seem to be for the earlier 06-08 bikes, or are they the same thing? Secondly should I avoid the cheap ones and go for something else, is there a particular brand that is good without going for a genuine replacement pump.

Second thing is the fuel pump control unit. I see on eBay I can get a plug thing that allows for connecting directly to the pump should the controller pack up, how does this work? as I would have thought this would result in over pressuring the system and doing some damage to something.

Thanks.

You can power the pump directly from the battery should the fuel pump controller fail, the fuel pressure is controlled by the fuel pressure regulator.. there are a few posts on the forum about making your own controller by-pass, it’s very simple.

Excellent I’ll go take a look, thanks.

As you probably know BMW wants to sell you an entire assembly but the parts are individually replaceable.

These pumps are OEM quality and a popular replacement.

I have found that the ebay cheap pumps work well, in fact too well !!!.
The fuel pressure on the twin cam is 4 bar approx 60 psi this is controlled by the (mechanical) fuel pressure regulator.
There is also a pressure relief valve built into the fuel pump.
The ebay pumps that I have had problems with had a max pressure of over 120 psi and have a small orifice in the pump pressure relief valve, the consequence of this is that the pump is delivering more pressure / volume of fuel that the fuel pressure regulator can deal with, the result was too high fuel pressure.
At first investigating this I assumed it was a faulty fuel pressure regulator but turned out to be the pump.
Not the cheapest pumps but at a reasonable price are VDU pumps, who I believe make the OEM pumps these are I believe available from Motorworks.
Just for reference the pre- twin cam 04 - 09 bikes are 3.5 Bar fuel pressure, approx, 45 psi.

Cheers guys and thanks for the help, do any of you know where i could get a blue plug like the fuel pump controller has so I can make up a bypass lead? Some on eBay but £14 plus postage for a little plug like that seems a little rich.

I’ll have a look through my boxes of fecked electrical bit & bobs (they might come in handy one day) to see if there’s a controller. If (a big if) there is I’ll send it to you .. let you know tomorrow - I have several large boxes similar to this, the smallest relay box 722EC71E-6AF7-4735-80BB-79F7B6D81797.jpeg

The connector you need is a Tyco 3-828816-1 should you wish to Google other possible sources.

As the fuel pump draws around 7 amps you need to draw power direct from the battery and not the ZFE-controlled accessory port.

Brilliant thanks!

Your in luck.., not so much that I have one, but that I actually managed to find it :D - Pm where you want it sent, but doubt I’ll be going to a post office before Tuesday so no rush 2897F714-7797-42E0-ACC8-13968DCEE69B.jpeg

Hi, I’ve just tried to PM you but can’t seem to do it. Is it because I’m not a subscriber? Is there another way I can contact you?

Just a thought. These plugs come without pins - which can cost even more than the plug itself. Is there enough free cable between plug and controller ( on a currently working set up ) to splice in a suitable inexpensive common plug and connector ( example shown £3.50 flea bay ) ? Then make up a lead with a common connector so it could be easily plugged in when needed?
