Sticking Gear Change

would recommend that you get your dealer to change the gear oil and also perhaps check the master and slave cylinders. really shouldn't happen.

Hi Red glad to hear you sorted your problem its just a shame these silly problems spoil such a great bike! What fluid did you use for the clutch as I understand it does not use brake fluid,is this correct?

I should have mentioned that the Gear box seal was replaced under warranty in December, only around 1,000 miles ago perhaps, the clutch was contaminated, so was also replaced. Dec 07.

Would it take a little while longer for everything to be fully broken in and may this be the symptom I am experiencing?

The gear oil would have been changed with the above work surely.

Yes, it has to be mineral based, Vitamol (ARAL) is the oe fluid.

Yep mineral oil it is, a cheaper option rather than purchasing the OEM BMW oil is to go to your local motor shop and get the same fluid that is used for the hydraulics in Citroen cars. Exactly the same stuff, just branded differently.

I would bring your bike back to the dealer and tell him that you are not happy with the end result and in fact get him to test ride it from cold. A clutch change and gear oil change should not result in stiff/sticky gears at all! IF you had your transmission changed it may take some time to 'bed-in', but if anything a new clutch should be very very smooth. Just a guess, but it is possible that there is air in your clutch fluid hose?? Can cause weird and wonderful problems?? Thats the only thing I can think of to be honest..
Def get the dealer to sort it out, after all he did the work and he has to stand over it..

With relation to my own bike..... it is wrecking my head. The clutch fluid change did wonders for about 1,000 Km, then the problem returned again. I brought the bike back to my dealers (only 17,000 km) and he reckoned that it was the slave cylinder. He replaced it and it improved the problem but ut is still persistent especially when riding hard.

I am at a total loss as to why the problem is happening and can only deduce that perhaps the clutch is contaminated from leaking fluid onto the plates??? The bike is well out of warranty and the cost of breaking apart the clutch and sorting the issue is about €1,000 according to the dealer.... Might just have to bite the bullet as I will not sell on a problem bike and even though I know how to 'handle' the problem whilst riding, it takes away from the joy of riding it in the first place.....

Have'nt had any time to ride inthe past 6 months as i am recovering from Glandular fever and post op from Appendicitis (have had great luck!!).
When the weather improves I will take a closer look and get to the bottom of it...

Learnt to live with the sticking gearchange however when I took the bike in to have a leaking output seal changed I mentioned the problem. The guy went away and returned a few moments later saying that although the bike was out of warranty BMW would give me a new gearbox as a goodwill gesture. Mmm!

All fine since however the problem has now returned. Linkages all clean however have not changed/bled the clutch fluid. As it only sticks after several seconds of engine braking and mostly 6th to 5th I think these are red herrings. Some changes I can feel it catching/graunching. Was told by an engineering type last year that something in the internals starts to wear. Did seem odd that although the dealer denied any knowledge of a problem, same this time, BMW agreed to change the box.

Is this still an issue with other bikes?

Also about to put a third set of fork seals in, 10,000 miles since last ones!! Never wheelied or ridden seriously off-road.

Could be the friction plate sticking on the splines.

For bleeding the clutch fluid, get yourself a Mityvac hand vacuum pump.
