Hi Chaps,

I've got a year 2000 W reg 1100 with 27k on it, and at the weekend when I was out on it, after I'd select neutral it seemed like there was quite a long delay ( 2 - 4 secs ) before the neutral light would actually come on

Questions??

Is this a plunger type of switch that's getting sticky / worn out??

Where is it located, is it easy to get at and change??

Thanks in advance guys :thumb

Recently my neutral went funny after the earth fell to bits. For me I also had problems with the Alternator light. Basically all the idiot lights earth to one point in the loom. Its not particularly well made and rots easily. Might be worth rooting round your wiring.

I f I remember rightly its a brown wire with a thick green stripe running through it.

Sounds like you have a soft neutral switch. located on the back of the gearbox housing. Probably full of crap making it slow to react. I'm assuming that when the light eventually illuminates, it is at full brightness. A dim light would indicate a poor earth, or a resistance across the switch.

The neutral switch plays a part in the starting of the bike. It provides an earth for the starter relay. If the switch fails you will need to hold in the clutch to provide an alternate earth path for the starter relay.

Back of the gearbox, can be seen under the swingarm. Just a pair of long nosed pliars are need to remove the switch.
Pinch the two wire tabs in, and pull the switch out.
To replace use a cable tie to hold the wire tabs in, insert the switch, cut the cable tie.

The hardest part is getting at the plug end of the switch up near the alternator and wiggling all the wiring through the various openings.

Thanks guys, Fekkin Diamonds the lot of yer!

When the neutral light eventually comes on, its full brightness so I don't think its a dodgy earth.

Steptoe, thanks for your detailed instructions, once I get this switch out can it be cleaned / bit of WD40 to get it operating normally or is it a sealed unit or something?
Just asking cos a new ones £47!!!!
