Sticky throttle.

A couple of times my GSA TE has seemed to accelerate on its own it's almost like the cruise control has engaged resume. The first time it did I was going downhill and backed off the throttle and it accelerated. I out it down to my imagination.

Then yesterday coming up to a roundabout, I slowed indicated and then started to turn and off it went. Pulled the clutch in and braked and got round ok. Gave me a shock though.

Anyone had anything similar?

Yep, had exactly that, sort of glad someone else has experienced it too. In my case it caused me to hid a bank on the side of the road. i won't go into the details of that here but suffice to say it was either hit a car up the rear or hit the ditch I might add this was at approx 5 to 10 mph and directly related to what you are talking about. There was no damage to the bike apart from a cracked screen mount fortunately. I reported it to the dealer and they recovered the bike from my home, a few days later they phoned and said that they could find no fault with the bike. I am an advanced rider having ridden bikes since I was 16 and am now 68! I have taught advanced riding for ROSPA, so i have a little experience behind me! I have puzzled over this one ever since it happened, thinking it must be me? It seems to have happened on quite a few occasions where the bike seems to temporarily increase speed slightly on its own? Bit worrying now that it seems to have happened to someone else! any feedback from you guys may be of help?

Further to the above mine is also a 2014 GSA TE with quick shifter, reason I say that is that i am wondering if its something to do with the software for the QS as that is designed to blip the throttle on downshifts picking at straws maybe, but these high tech vehicles nowadays seem to have minds of their own. I know only too well with my LR Discovery a blown brake light bulb can cause all sorts of issues, all to do with the can bus and ECU's not communicating correctly!!!!

Never resulted in any mishap but I have experienced this a few times, like you guys I just shrugged it off, it happens so quickly and unexpectedly at slow speed that I just thought perhaps it was me.

Mmmmm interesting. My bike is a (Nov) 2014 model as stated with QS. Yes a fly by wire throttle but this should not be happening, it is a definite safety issue and worthy of further investigation. In my case it could have spelt disaster if the bank had not been there and there had been a bit drop, don't bear thinking about! If this is common with a lot of bikes it should be investigated by BMW. If there is enough bikes out there with this problem lets set up a poll, and get BMW involved.

Guess it's not a common issue then. I know for a fact this is not rider error as I have carefully monitored this issue for quite a while now. Point proven now there are two more cases reported!

Just a point these throttles are sensitive so maybe the people that experience this try rain mode all the time

Thanks for your comment een, you are right compared with the old fashioned cable throttle which always had a bit of slack the FBW is very sensitive. But from experience in trying to find out what the seemingly is the issue here, I have experienced this quick surge on a closed throttle, not all of the time I might add, but on occasions throttle off and the bike seems to accelerate slightly for a split second enough to make you think what the hell. I hadn't reported it here before because i was searching for an answer myself, always it was possibly me! But now similar occurrences have shown up as above!

Problem with this type of electronic glitch is that it ranks alongside the failure of the esa suspension to rise or the traction control kicking in at for no reason on a dry bend or at 120 kmph on an Autobahn and cutting power to the engine in that when it is reported to the dealer and they plug it in it comes back as 'there are no reported faults or issues' .

So unless it happens when being ridden by a mechanic there is bot all they can or will be able to do about it

Sticky throttle

Out on Saturday, same thing on approach to left hander lifted off throttle bike took a surge had to tap rear brake to her bring back in line. Due first service on Friday will b highlighted.

Looks like this is starting to become reasonably common! Out today so I thought I would try a few different approaches. Approaching a bend closed throttle took my hand off the right bar throttle side so as to make sure I didn't touch the throttle in any way, I used a little back brake and sure enough there was a definite surge forward, controlled by the back brake for safety. One Winged please forward any findings from the dealer, but like my dealer will prob say can't find any issue. It appears it is certain situations that cause this surge, still trying to determine what they are!

What rpm does it drop to before it surges?

It is only apparent when going reasonably slowly and the throttle is rolled right off, the revs are irrelevant but suffice to say they would be under 2000.

Now it's been mentioned i've definitely had this on a few ocassions, each time slowing down where I would have had a closed throttle and each time i'm having a word with myself "for gods sake close the throttle properly". Interesting. Mine's a 2013 model, must be one of the first off the production line so no quickshifter.

I found the throttle to be too light on mine. Very easy to inadvertently give it a bit, even with thin gloves on.

<2000RPM seems an awfully low engine speed.
