Looking for a way out
Rode to work this morning for the first time this week. The instant I set off I noticed that the clutch felt all wrong.
the biting point has moved from near the extream end of the travel to now being when the level is nearly touching the bars.
WTF? Any ideas what might have made this change so suddenly?
The 'co-incidence' is I replaced a fork seal on Saturday, so it makes me wonder if I did something then, but I can't work out what or how. there is no sign of the hydraulic pipe kinked or pinched.
It sure has mucked up my smooth changes :spitfire

The clutch has misteriously sorted itself out (if only more problems ignored would do that). Maybe some air in the system which has returned to the top of the fluid reservoir?

On the way home, my full tank was showing 1/2 on the RID, and the temperture RID was flickering the last bar all the time. Is this symtomatic of electrical failure, or should I ignore it and hope it goes away.

Which bike Jim? If its a 1200, there has been a change of manufacturer of clutch pressure plates - some have proved faulty with weak springing causing all sorts of fun with the clutch bite point.

Could also be the slave cylinder as mentioned above - maybe bleed it first. If its a 1200 it uses some special green mineral fluid NOT normal clutch/brake fluid.

Its a 1150. the idea of electric problems is always worrying, I think I'd have a breakdown if it was on the 1200's cleverness.

the clutch is playing up again. I bled it last night and it was fine on the way to work, but no good on the way home. feels like air getting into the system. No fluid loss or leaks.
New slave cylinder time?

Jimbo , it could be the seals in the master cyl (lever end) letting by. I would check or replace them first, I would have thought if it was the slave cyl. you would be losing fluid, and you say your not.
I've know doubt someone will come along and shoot this theory down in flames, but it's an easier option to start with if your stuck with the 'replace it and try it' technic,

Good luck

My slave cylinder went recently – symptoms were as described, change in biting point a few weeks before the thing failed. As Steptoe has said before, the slave cylinder is a sealed unit and as such needs to be replaced as a complete unit. It sits in a recessed housing in the gearbox and as a result it’s bit of a pig to get to. I managed to do it in a few hours and I’m no good with a set of spanners. Used slave cylinder was about £23 from motorworks – new one is just short of £100.

PM for more help if you need it.

Good luck :thumb

have you checked the clutch hose where it connects to the slave cyl,
make sure you peel the outer sleeve back as it holds water causing the metal
fitting to rust and cause alsorts. steptoe posted a few months back. :rob

This happened on mine and it was the fuel sender inside the tank. When I did the fuel filter change at 24k I cleaned the contacts on the float arm and increased the pressure on the contacts by bending it slightly.

My temp also played up but it all went back to normal operation when started up.

The connector under the right hand side of the tank may need a clean as well. Do a search and you should find plenty on it.

I would bleed it, the manuals instruct you to keep the resevoirs horizontal at all times, did it hang while you were doing the fork seal?

Welshie

I have bleed the clucth and all seemed well several hours, now the symtoms return. I think air must be getting in somewhere, odd there is no sign of fluid escaping.
