Reliving bike trips whilst sat at my desk....
Here I am in Argentina, and I have a couple of questions!! This is the first: I have been riding pretty gently so far (50-70mph), partly due to consumption, partly due to not wanting to miss the views and largely due to not wanting to bin a very heavy bike!!. We are now in the mountains at anything from 300 - 1100 m elevation. I have been consistently filling up on 95 Ron octane unleaded. However, when I open her up on hard acceleration, eg to overtake, the engine appears to make a crackling noise. With the wind noise the only way I can describe it is like the noise the bike makes when its cooling down after a blast, only very rapidly, and not a crackle every few seconds. Rather several a second. Not very loud either. Theres no loss in power and the engine is actually starting to burn less oil. Is this pinking?? I've never had it before, but always thought it was a metallic ping. Also, on this octane and at such relativelñy low elevation, I can't see why it would. Or is it rapid expansion of the engine due to the burst of heat from a down change and yank on the throttle.

Tell me what it is for the love of all that is pure in the world!! :nenau I don't want to pop a piston.

Steptoe: you still up?

Are you sleeping with Colesyboy or something ???

Almost certainly.

Use the gearbox more.

And stop worrying.

Seconded

Thanks for the input folks. The fuels was 95 octane on the pump, but maybe less. Unlikely to be the valves as suggested in Colesboy's thread (by the way, Tarka, that lad is good in the sack!!;))

I will fill up with 98 or 100 octane as I found in one petrol station out there for this next stage and see if the same happens. (6 GBP for a full tank out here !!)

Cheers folks
