Strange problem

I just checked for water in the fuel pump controller recess (under the l/h tank cover) today and as well as finding some I had an odd thing happen when I started the bike up.

The startup sequence completed fine.

The bike ran for a few seconds (until the battery symbol extinguished) and stopped. Just thinking that this was first night nerves I repeated this several times and the result was identical, even if the throttle was eased open after starting.

I noticed that the side stand was neither up or down. I flipped it up and - you've guessed it everything was fine.

I don't really think that I have a problem but am I missing something here?

Yes you are, always ensure your sidestand is fully up!

Have you worn the hairs off the edges of the tyres yet :D

No where near:eek:

I can do that but need the added insurance of dry warm roads that I know ell.

I haven't experienced any of these yet:D

BTW I'm sure that red's faster than yella

"I'm sure that red's faster than yella" Nope, just a con to sell an inferior product ;) :D
I`ve got the Dunlop 607`s on mine & I`m VERY impressed with them. I had a ride out with a couple of mates on sportsbikes & their Pirelli Diablos were colder than my 607`s over the same route :) must`ve been my riding ;) :D
Hairs well & truly worn off & I`m starting on my boot sliders now!

Still seems strange.

I would expect it to either start or not but not for a few seconds.

Yes Paul I agree. I feel exactly the same way. Obviously I need to repeat the starting process with the sidestand half way down.

Now that it's running fine I'm sorta loath to meddle.

Do you understand my logic?

Glad someone else is impressed with the D607, I thought I was the only one. Seems a great tyre to me (although I'll try the BT020 next time).
Hairs went very quickly and the rear scrubbed right to the edge but the front still has a few millimeters of unscrubbed tyre, seems like I'll never get that bit used!

Similar kinda problem...

When it's been raining a lot, or after I washed the bike. I've had it on the centerstand and started her up... She starts fine, and runs for a few seconds then stops. Repeat procedure until I get a bit nervous... Take the bike off centerstand, and she starts fine...

I was thinking I had one of those duff stand-connector-switches-malarkeys...?!

the bike off centerstand, and she starts fine

Also strange. I thought it was only the sidestand that was switched.

Paul

No switch on the centre stand. That is the position for tuning the throttle bodies. Joker, there had to be a different answer. Good luck in finding it.

Cheers,

My guess is there is standing water ( from the washing or rain ) somewhere, possibly on the fuel pump controller on the top left side of the tank.
The water is causing a problem while the bike is on the centre stand and shorting something out maybe. A topic well covered by Dutch earlier.
With the bike off the stand and the back of the bike a lot lower the water runs off somewhere else where it does no harm. Just a thought.

Didn't know that only the side-stand was switched... (hadn't even looked), but I think you might be onto something here!

But... Woudn't the bike stall if I'm about to pull away...? The bike pulled away just fine on both occasions this has happened.

i have the same problem. but... when i start the bike in the morning i don't have the problem.

when i leave work and i start the bike the engine turns on for a few seconds. when i restart the bike and pull the clutch in the motor keeps turning. when i let the clutch go after a few seconds the motor dies...

no problems at all starting the bike at sidestand.

I had exactly the same problem on my R12 when washing her the other day, bike was on centre stand but i also had the side stand down, bike obviously not in gear, she started and then cut out repeatedly, opening the throttle made no difference, start and cut out kept happening, lifting the side stand then immediately sorted the problem. It hasnt occured at any other time and hasnt proved a problem.

Welsh Magician, that's what I wanted to hear I suppose. Maybe it's not a problem really (he said looking for some sand to bury his head in:D :D
