Strange question I know....

If a dealer orders a new engine from BMW, and one is sent, does it already have it's oil in it ?
I know they're a complete bolt straight in unit, but just wondering, if anyone knows.

Id Imagine there will be some oil in it as during assembly oil is used to lubricate crankshaft bearings etc. So at least some il should be in there? why do you ask is the question, Surely if it is a warranty job then it is up to the dealer to make sure that there is a sufficient level of oil in the motor before they release the vehicle to the end user.......

Sorry, no. Not a warranty job. A discussion I was having with someone the other day.
About wether the engines came, "plug and play" ready to start with oil in (though obviously coolant would need to be added I'm guessing)

I would have thought that there should be oil in a new engine as they would have been bench tested before being signed off the production line.

that's my thinking, coolant might not be but oil at least some definitely.

i dont know about BMWs, but over the years I have bought many gearboxes for industrial equipment. Years ago they were delivered with a temporary liquid that gave off vapours that would permeate the gears, bearings etc and allow storage for possibly up to a year. They were never shipped with the operational oil. Nowadays we insist on first fill being supplied and its usually in the box already rather than in a separate can.

Yes it does .... it also comes with an oil filter attached

After assembly the engines are cold tested. A machine spins it up and measures certain parameters including compression. From there it goes to meet the frame and the final bit is a test on a running road. So it does have oil added at assembly.
