I've just took possession of a Pure Highway radio, and want to hard wire the power supply..... It comes with a Garmin power lead....

No sure what I'd find if I cut into this cable...... can anyone tell me what is in there please?

Also there is a small junction in the picture, which seems to contain a pair of coils

I want to hard wire to a switched live.... but don't want to ruin it!

take the fag lighter end apart, keep the internals and then cut the tube part off leaving the suare end with 2 exposed wires wrap them in heat shrink tubing
thats what i did for a gps unit lead that i hard wired in:thumb2

Thanks for the replies folks.... I think I'll go with the ebay suggestion and keep the garmin bit intact :thumb

or you just buy one of these

HTH,

John

I got one very similar to that lead from Ebay (mine didn't have the inline fuse) and it worked fine.

EDIT......and put a switch inline as well........believe it or not, there's enough current draw even with no load on the USB end that a few weeks parked up will see it flatten a battery.

Until the end (the usb male end) went rusty inside a week :blast

I haven't let it put me off, though now I know that they're cheap for a reason (poor metal) I shall put a rubber cap over the replacement :thumb

(I know, I should have done it on the first one, but as it lives in a cubby in my big fairing, I didn't think of it :blast)

PS check Ebay a bit Bryn........the one I ordered today was 99p plus 50p PnP

EDIT.......Run it through a switch as well (or make it ignition fed +ve) as believe it or not, the little rectifier will draw enough power to flatten a battery if you leave it powered up when you go on holibobs)

Thanks for the info Bill :thumb

I was planning on tapping into the switched accessory socket on the GTR... The radio will live in the tank top storage compartment where its warm and dry..

I road tested it today on battery power, having sited the stick aerial inside the fairing panel.. I think i need to move it as the signal was being lost too often... Could be it was too close to the engine

Anyway... Something else to tinker with
