Hi guys,

Finally got out for a ride today after long winter. Bike started fine as I did start it occasionally but, the clutch would not engage. The good news is with 5 mins of exercising the clutch and my hand it began to engage. I got out an hour and it's pretty much back to normal, it squeaks a little when I tried it after I git back, but seems okay, should I get this checked out?

Cheers

I think you mean disengage, (ie allow you to select a gear) it has probably got a slight coating of rust on the pressure plate/drive plate which bonds the friction plate to the steel faces, hence not disengaging. The squeak you can hear is just rusty dust which will quickly clear, don't worry it will be fine.:thumb

i always thought we engaged the clutch to select a gear and disengaged once selected

disengage engage its all confusing, ride it some more see if the problem gets better/worse. :thumb

This just proves the old adage: RIDE THE FOOKIN THING

M/cycles....like cars.... dont like being left unloved.

So. to prevent ay problems :...keep em us'd

Clutch disengaged = No power to the rear wheel, no drive.
Clutch engaged = Drive to the rear wheel = forward motion drive.

Same for a car.

How is your clutch master cylinder fluid level and colour?.
Blackish fluid may mean the slave cylinder seals have gone.
Fluid leaks can cause dis-engagement problems;your pumping the lever may have temporarily corrected the problem.

I have never checked or changed my clutch fluid in 13 years.

Like Teejaye, I ride an 1100 :thumb2

I had an old airhead that got bound-up if you left it for a few days after a good, hard ride.... If it sticks solid, try this:

run till warm, turn ignition off, bung it in third, pull clutch lever and rock back and forth ... Wait for the ping as it suddenly frees up ...
