A hard drive is my recommendation. Actually, if you have a nic in both boxes, blag a cheap router or hub and just move what you need. Bob's your uncle mate. *
* Just practising my English for my upcoming visit.
Just moved up to Win XP Home on a Dell and ordered the "Transfer myPC" package for about £35. Install the s/w on both PCs, connect with supplied cable, hit the button and retire for 45mins. All those myriad settings I never even knew existed, emails, images etc etc went over - worth every single penny
Just a cross over cable from www.Novatech.co.uk and a couple of NIC's (Network interface connectors) if your PC's don't already have them, looks like a slightly larger modem socket.
Then you've gotta set up NIC's with IP address's / work group etc
Share the hard disk on the (* box
And copy across, you can't copy programs these will need to be "installed" only data ie .doc .xls etc.
You can do this with p[proprietary software and a cable in a box ie LapLink
Or another option just take hard disk out of old PC and stick it in the new PC as a slave, copy data across (programs still won't work).
Shout if you need any more help
I use the stick the hard disk in the new one all the time for customers upgrading hardware. AS generally the new PC has a huge disk compared to the old one.
you could use the XP "files & transfer settings wizard" to move stuff accross, but i've had it throw up a couple of strange anomalys lately. i'm stopping using it unless all the software is the same in both machines as a result.
ABOUT THE PROGRAMS THAT WONT WORK ON XP
YOU CAN USE COMPATABILITY MODE IN XP JUST RIGHT CLICK ON THE ICON FOR YOUR 98 PROG SELECT PROPERTIES AND THE COMPATABILITY FROM THE TOP TABS SELECT RUN IN COMPATABILITY MODE THEN SELECT 98 FROM THE DROP DOWN BELOW AND HAY PRESTO WHEN YOU TRY TO RUN THE PROGRAM WINDOWS FLICKS TO 98 MODE AND THE TURNS BACK WHEN YOU SHUT THE PROGRAM DOWN
NOT 100 PERCENT BUT OK WITH MOST THINGS
STICK THE HARD DRIVE IN AS A SLAVE TRANSFER YOUR STUFF THEN SWAP IT BACK ITS THE CHEAPEST WAY

Thanks CJ but this all sounds rather complicated to me (but then again I'm bloody useless when it comes to PCs - although I'll write you a mean COBOL program to process a million and a half transactions a day if you like)
I'm a dinosaur basically and just want the easiest way of transferring the stuff . I don't want to take the disk out and put it back in again (I've got two disks anyway so that complicates matters).
The suggestions for a piece of software to do it sounds good to me and I thank those that pointed me in the right direction
