Hi Chaps

Can you let me know where I can find the chassis/frame number on a GS1200 please?
The reason I ask is that I'm looking for a badly crash damaged bike to rebuild into something a bit different.
Something like this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/R1200GS-2...d=100033&prg=10684&rk=2&rkt=4&sd=251605012855

It's my intention to put a different front end in, and convert it to a 'ahem' normal roadster.
The one in the ebay ad is unsuitable as it has no V5 (I'm trying to avoid re-registering and sva's etc)
The bike would be stripped back to the bare minimum (sorry), and I'm guessing some of the leftovers, bodywork, panniers, electrics, abs etc might be of use to you guys?

However, if the chassis number is on the headstock....then it's back to the drawing board.

Jeeeeeez.....29 views and no one knows where the frame number is located?
Seriously? :yelrotflm:

The VIN number on an 1150 is certainly on the headstock however that doesn't really help with the 1200 series. I'm sure someone will confirm soon.

Interesting project BTW - what are you aiming for? - a budget R Nine T or an HP2E/MM clone? Either way it sounds interesting - and a bit difficult. Worth noting that there's a company in Germany who are about to market telescopic equipped K25 (that's the 1200 series) bikes in both pre-built and kit form. Available from early next year but no details available yet.

Good luck:thumby:

Thanks for the replies gents.
I'm considering building a r9t look a like.
However, I'm looking for a simpler and more 'uncluttered' look.
I'd like to use a later 12 as a base depending on cost and availability.
Budget is iro £7500, so looking for a decent damaged donor say about £3k. (not too sure what that will buy though)
Also looked at Nico Bakker frame, lovely bit of kit, but a bit out of my price range.

Sounds like an interesting project - I think it's just about possible for your budget. Keep us informed:thumb

The VIN number is etched onto a little stainless plate that's welded to the headstock A frame. It's not quite the smallest frame part on the bike.
BMW don't do security. It would be so simple to cut that off and weld to smother subframe.

The seller should have a paper trail you can follow showing where the bike originated from. There is also the engine number which you could use to establish the vin.

The advert doesn't seem to make sense as it states "you are bidding on a front axel" his words and spelling!
