feel stupid now but can anybody tell me what the blue circle around the black pointer is?

It's the 'circle of uncertainty'.

Watch it and when you're partly shielded from the satellites, the circle will grow......basically it's the area you could be in according to the accuracy ofthe readings.

If you've got one all the time, you've got problems.

If you have a poor sat reception it shows the amount of error

I believe ther circle is actually a combination of potential satellite error and mapping error
