I rode the Strata Florida today, got nearly to the end after going through some arse clenching water and then I got complacent because we were near the end and instead of walking in and seeing how deep went straight in with the result it threw me off and i went right under and so did the bike,
Pushed it out and it was locked full of water pulled the plugs and water pissed out, turned it over on the starter to clear it plugs back in and it started after a while, exhaust was like a fire hose.
Anyways rode it home 70miles, down on power, running rough and smoking now and then and a a few tapping noises.

Dropped the oil and pulled the air filter heres what was inside it,

Nice one. :thumb
Would have thought the water was as low as it's going to get after the last few weeks.

You probably could have bought a proper trail bike for what it will cost to repair your GS!

That's why I didn't buy a second hand GS it will be up for sale next week, one careful owner.

Might be an idea to drop the FD and gearbox oil too and check for emulsification. If clean you can always put it back in.

FD - just change it anyway. Gearbox drop out a little and see if any water settles out.

Drive shaft tunnel could be filled up so drop the FD back to have a look and grease the splines while its open.

Thinking aloud, the FD lower trunion never gets regreased so well worth doing. It will need lots of heat on the outer end to soften the thread lock.

There was a good 1/2 inch of emulsified oil/water on the inside of the rocker covers, the breather to the air box was nearly blocked with it as well.

Dont look like the airbox can be removed without taking the back end off so i had the steam cleaner in there to wash it out, still not got it all out though, will try some petrol in there tomorrow.

I will only be pissed if its fucked coz I wanted to do the 100k on it its on 97.5 at the moment.

Last week Berlin, this week mid Wales off road and some scratching to on b roads to get there, got 4 other bikes and there is a trail bike amongest them but where the challenge in that, indeed wheres the "adventure".:thumb2

Air box will come off with rear frame in place. The RHS throttle body has to come off with the cable splitter box and battery. There are a three or four bolts under the air box.

But when both TBs are off you can clean the airbox on the bike.

Same as a car engine with blown head gasket and coolant in oil. Clean out what gunk you can then run the bike with cheap oil for long enough to boil away the water. Dump that out and refill with the good stuff & new filter.

get round any connectors, bar switches and lamp holders that have been under with a repellent spray, gawd knows what water in the works will do to the canbus, the mechanicals you can see whats wet, lecky stuff is more hidden!

ok got all the shit out of the air box,
flushed it with petrol in the end.
new oil and filter and fired it up, started ok but its running lumpy below 2k, pulled the injectors and gave them a squirt of cleaner, no difference.

Got it up to temperature and its sounding a bit noisy, noticed the valve clearances had opened up when I was in there cleaning so will do them and give it another go.

Sounds a bit cam chainy as well, think the tensioners use the oil so maybe they are shitted up, tried to get the lefthand one out but its in tight so im not sure if that one will get checked.

I'd try dropping the oil and refreshing again before you pull too much apart.

If what you now drop has got any water at all in it, do it again and again until it comes out clean.
