i am now reading the official booklet for the GS and wonder whether we should use super unleaded or unleaded fuel ??
In two different places claims two different things !!

Any ideas?

95 RON, which is standard unleaded here in the UK.........

Will run okay on 91 RON......

From owners handbook..............

Cheers

It's all 95 octane in the UK or the super unleaded is 98 and a waste of money.

Been using super unleaded for a couple of months now. Doesn't make the bike any faster but IMHO it certainly makes the bike run smoother. Our local Tesco has it discounted so its about the same price as standard 95 ron. Try a tank full and lets have your views. It won't harm the bike, the new RT specifies 98 ron so someone has already realised it works.

I've been trying to find where I read it (failed so far) but a recent write up on the 1200RT seemed to suggest that it was the first engine designed to optimise 98 Ron fuel. It went further and said that using 98 in anything not so designed was a waste of time!

I've compared Shell 98 RON with 95 RON in the firms Pan Euro's, (because it doesn't cost me anything) and you don't notice any difference in performance. However, I'm sure they put additives in to justify the extra price.
The RT has probably got a higher comp ratio to gain the extra 10 bhp and so will gain from the higher octane rating.
The 40 plus age group among us will remember when you could buy 2,3,4 and 5 star petrol.

Yep, and you got change from a quid when you bought 4 gallons.

And in those 1960's wonders of Brummy engineering with souped up motors running domed pistons and dodgy ignition we needed all the lead we could get!

But I do like the idea that some oil company executive has authorised the addition of more expensive additives to justify the price of super unleaded. I think I will cry next time I see a Shell or BeePee ad on TV. Blub, blub.

super unleaded

I get 10-20 miles more per tank with 98 than with 95RON. I've tried the comparison a few times. No discernable performance difference though.

True : GS1200 is 11:1 and RT1200 is 12:0.

As most of people going for trips where they can find poor quality petrol are driving GS, that's the reason why they designed it with the possibility tu use such a poor octane level.

But it seems that with a complete line of remus exhaust (without cat), you will get these 10hp while burning oct 95

I seem to remember seeing 91 RON in Belgium or Germany on a trip in 2003.
