Hi All. Had my 1100GS for a few months and love it, but I have a problem. During the last few rides I've noticed surging but put it down to being normal, as I've seen a few comments on this site regarding this subject.

Went for a run on Sunday and then parked up for a hour before returning home but when I started the bike there was a huge backfire and it sounded as thou the exhaust had blow.

I rode home with the engine surging and the exhaust sounding as if there were no bafflers. However when I arrived home I discovered that the backfire had blow the air ducts( black tube) off the engine bit (technical or what?) I replaced and the bike sounded fine.

Went for a run this evening and there was surging which made the handling on slow corners a bit uncomfortable. When I got home there was a strong smell of petrol and on checking found that there was petrol dripping out of the small gauge vent pipe to the rear of the bike.

Please could any of you technically minded members give me some info on this problem? Regards, Jeff

Bounced to the top .......Someone help this chappie.....

I would start by checking all the fuel line feed, return and tank breather pipes are 100% O.K., ie no kinks, splits or trapped pipes.
As with all engine faults, start with the basics first.

Good call Bryn :thumb

:)

Jeff....you say 'over the last few rides'....so this is a new problem???

How long ya had the bike, how many miles it got on it and did this come on suddenly????

Does sound like a fuelling/spark/timing type problem.....

Have you had the tank off recently???

If so, we'll have a race to see who can post the two pics the quickest....stand by your buttons gentlemen!!!

:D

surging

Thanks for the replies. Yes it is a new problem, had the bike a few month, great until last week, haven't had the tank off. It has been backfiring lately and it seems that the trouble has followed from that. Regards, Jeff

Now I am about as technically competent as a wombat, but I had backfiring, popping, surging etc on my 1150 the other day. Had a look at the fuel lines, breather pipes and noticed that the throttle cable had popped out of the little metal holder bit down near the engine. I popped it back in place and everything was fine again. I had removed the tank the previous day though to get at the battery.

Sorry I replied to the call for help, seems I may have over-stepped my mark there, as Fanum says, 'Over to Steptoe', I'll sit back and learn.

Hi, I know I'm the new guy, so if I'm stepping on any toes here, I'll apologise (but just this once) I've been lurking for quite a while now and have popped up on this one 'cos I had loads and loads of experience with this 'ere popping, banging, farting and general grumpy behavior from my '96 1100gs. (and now runs like a missile)

first thing to check,
all throttle cables seated correctly in the collects (on both sides) mentioned already by another member i know, but bears repeating.
second,
check both butterflies are sync'd. (depends on which cable system you have- the "down to the left and over" or the "down to the box on top of the gearbox and out to each side") in both cases the cable will stretch and ruin the sync,
LASTY AND NOT BE FAFFED WITH LIGHTLY!
the TPS ('ickle black box on the side of the LHS throttle body only) is squiffed (they NEVER go wrong but DO get bashed out of place) and needs resetting to the optimum position (about 0.1volt in the UK). BUT! DO NOT FAFF WITH THAT! unless you really have not found any other faults first, even then you need to read (and understand - i mean it) everything that a guy called "Rob Lentini" has put on the BMW Internet Riders Group about sorting these problems.

I will bore you all ragged if you want me to but would rather not

Anyhoo, thats about it, i'll disappear back into the woodwork.

Nice to speak.
Tara

oh, i'll try to find the link for the info and post it here so you can read it if feel the need (or have acute insomnia)- personally i hit myself over the head with a mallet.

found it. from here you can read up on the problems that cause almost every 1100 "bad behaviour" problem- the list of causes is short, the list of effects is long. to paraphrase Ewan MacGregor "You must do what you think is right of course".

What I can tell you is that by following the advice VERY CAREFULLY and with both of my rather small brain cells engaged at the same time, I managed to solve the vibes, smooth the surge, kill of the knock and sort the grumpy, sooty, steaming, surging pile of poo of an engine of mine into something much more like it.

you now enjoy the same level of ignorance that i do, good night.
