Surging

It would appear that I shouldn't be allowed to play with mechanical things anymore :blast

Either that, or my feeler gauges doing the valve clearances are sized in metres, not inches ......... :augie

Anyway, the important thing is that Neil has got me back on the road, and I'm heading down there once this hangover goes away ...... :thumb

I take it you were too big on the clearances rather than too tight? (if you're going to mess it up, that's the way to go ;) )

That's good though! If you never have the problem again it was the tps.

Ok, so that hasn't fixed it.

I can ride it to work in the morning, 28 miles and it's fine. I ride it home, and about 10 miles from home it starts hopping like a kangaroo.

If I try to hold constant revs (both in gear and in neutral) it bounces about all over the rev range.

I''ve replaced the coil, plugs and tps, Neil's done the valves and balanced the throttles.

Any ideas as what to do next? :(

When you were here i did mention that the fuel pump was very noisy. And you had been in the tank changing the fuel filter.

I had similar with my 99' 1100GS last year and after trying all the usual stuff it was cured by replacing the throttle cables. In my case I couldn't get it it idle smoothly and sometimes it was running too fast then too slow and was just all over the place. The throttle cables on both sides had frayed slightly on the left and quite a bot on the right and the sharp frayed bits were randomly causing the throttle to stick at different points. If you haven't looked at yours, which most of us don't do because they are buried deep underneath the battery tray, it might be worth a look.

Neil's had a go at sorting it, so I'm fairly sure it isn't the cables. It's the 'bouncing' revs that are odd - they are all over the place, even on constant throttle ....

Was just thinking about that. I had been having the same problem before I went into the tank, which got me to change the fuel filter in the first place .....

But far more expensive if you use Peta's solution to the fuel pump!

I guess it depends how handy you are with a soldering iron. If you can get a pair of 2av54 hall effect sensors or the equivalent and some heat resistant silicone cable from the local remote control car / model shop, then the HES repair is pretty cheap (sub £30). It might even only need the cable replacing and not the sensors.

Also an Audi 80 fuel pump from German, Swedish and French comes in at about £50. I've done both repairs and the HES was far easier than the fuel pump.

Not sure I trust my soldering enough not to make things worse!

Were you coming out on the A37 the other night? I noticed another GS behind me which seemed to be behaving a bit erratically
