My driveshaft has failed.

I removed it without taking out the swing arm. Pulled out the rubber boot and levered the shaft back.

Don't think it will be that easy to do this when putting it back together. :blast

Which begs the question how does the swing arm come out?

The left hand side appears fairly straightforward - unscrew the locknut, then unscrew the pin.

The right hand side mentions using a slide hammer to draw the pin out. I haven't got one. Is there a way of getting it out without using a slide hammer? I see machine mart do a kit: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cht251-10-pce-slide-hammer-puller-set : is this suitable?

You might be lucky and get the shaft back on if you get an extra pair of hands to help out. Failing that the machine mart item would do, you may have to manufacture the correct adaptor to fit the pin your pulling out. Depends what you get with the tool:nenau

If it's tight unscrewing it STOP

go and get a heat gun and heat the area thoroughly!

There is a thread lock material bonded to most of the Swingarm and suspension components and if you just tear away unscreing you "May" bollix the threads in alloy beyond repair!

Thanks for the replies.

I got the slide hammer from Machine Mart. It has an attachement that you can fit a bolt in so no machining necessary. :thumb2

I've got a heat gun and will get it out. Hate steel bolts in ally. Recipe for disaster.

Any chance of doing some pics and a job report rick? I believe theres some bearings in there that benifit from greasing.

Cheers

What went wrong with your driveshaft, the UJ's ??:nenau

Any chance of a picture?

Yes the UJs, more specifically the rear one. Not much to see in a picture really, looks normal. As you move it back and forward it just feels a bit notchy. A bit like steering head bearings, just get to a certain position and you can feel its notchy.

Bike just felt a bit vibey, sometimes the vibration would pulse and I just felt it wasn't right. That's the problem, these things sometimes happen so gradually you don't notice them. It began to worry me and that was before I searched the posts on here.

Bike's done 48000 miles. Seems a bit low to me for them to go, but I suppose its wear and tear. One of those things

Sorry, should have done a how to, but didn't think of it. Bit late now, swing arm and shock back in. :thumb2

All being well will be back together tomorrow.
