Swinging arm failure

TJD1200....glad your ok mate.....must have been a heart stopping few seconds!

I have shown the pics to our legal bod at work today who said that VOSA would indeed be interested in that.

He has offered to make contact with his VOSA contacts to direct him to the right person if thats the way you want to go.

Let me know if you need any assistance mate...

Sounds like a helpful offer:thumb

Firstly Glad you are ok TJD that looks pretty horrific.

To me something like this needs flagged to VOSa as you were lucky and someone else may not be. I have a GS which although a great bike to ride unfortunately has its problems. Gearbox oil seal has failed and yes its a common problem along with FPC EWS etc etc...13000 miles on a 2004.:eek

Its a sad fact that the Jap bikes I own seem to be better built..:bow:pullface

Still do the decent thing :angel and tell VOSA if you read an article in MCN or heard on this site that someone was'nt as lucky as you,you would feel shit...

If it gets raised then BMW at least can look at it when they service thier bikes and hopefully it will filter down.

Bikes can be fixed bodies take a bit more time...

Now I'm not one for spreading 'doom and gloom', it's a man made item and anything can fail, we know that so far we can only see 2 affected bikes, ok maybe 3, but I can't help wonder how many peeps have come off bikes, maybe seriously, but it's been put to rider error and a broken swingarm has been put down to the result of the accident, makes me wonder anyway :thumb

Glad your ok, I think going by the numbers sold, if your riding a 1200 you've still got more chance of *being hit by lighting twice at the same time whilst shagging your best mates sister, than your swing arm failing :thumb2
*(if that has happened to you, at least you weren't riding a 1200 as they're really dodgy :thumb)

glad to here no one was hurt but after doing a bit of googling found that honda , suzuki and triumph have all suffered similar swing arm failures , one suzuki had only 4100 miles under its belt before the arm gave up . i will see you all when we run to the hills:eek:

So did yamaha on the TDM900 but it wasn't such a total failure. The mount on the underside for the suspension sheared off but it was mostly due to lack of maintenance on the linkages.

2004-2006 Aprilia RSV owners should check if their swinging arm has been replaced under a factory recall. They can split and fail around a drilled hole, on the inner face, near the spindle on the sprocket side.

I've seen one but it wasn't mine. :D

The rear suspension linkages can split as well, mine did, and are best replaced with an aftermarket item. The rear shock can snap as well.

I did that in the middle of Argentina. I thought it was my fault and so did BMW when I got the bike back. Luckily for me they changed their minds after some threats.

did some gsxr1000 not have a problem with the frame snapping around the headstock, did that stop folk from buying them ,i think not ,its oviously a two off.instead of a one off.

The story so far....

...again thank you all for your comments and suggestions.....

The story so far.....

Put the bike in to a BMW dealer to have it assessed and made a request that BMW may wish to take a look at this catastrophic failure .............for many reasons.
After a few days I received a quote for repair. I phoned up to disscuss this a asked about the request. The reply wasn't what I expected......

It was suggested that because I had bought this bike outside on the BMW dealership circle??? they were not willing to even take a look at it. Suggesting that the bike had been in a rear end shunt significant enough to damage the bike but not to cause any visual damage????
They can tell all this from a couple of amature photographs, what clever people they are......

The rub..... If I had bought the bike from a BMW dealer...... you can guess the rest...... Good PR ?

Not a good subject to be discussing over this festive season....

The better news is that my own insurance has come up trumps and I now have the bike back mostly repaired....

I also have all the broken bits back after a brief discussion with the isurance company.......ummmm

Hope you all had a joyest Christmas and look forward to a better 2012.....

Regards

Terry

V.OS.A shame on you bmw falures happen...to not even investigate is criminal these are not prototypes

Well, seems clear then... not a quality control issue at all then. Glad you are OK and perhaps just a victim of a second hand bike with a history :nenau:D

What seems clear ? That to avoid paying for repair or accept any sort of liability, BMW 'suggest' (without any investigation )the bike has been rear ended ?

....without getting into a long conversation about it they are suggesting that it is a secondhand bike from a Non BMW dealer without a history and in the next breath has a history......only they know how that works....... (if I'm reading it right...)
