Telepeage

Mais oui

There is a seperate rate for bikes, usually about half what cars pay. You could buy a telepeage gizmo, but not much point on a motorbike. I've got one on the cars, as it saves tons of time especially when there are huge queues during the holiday periods here, but never use it for the bike. Bikes should use the manned operator lanes (the ones with the picture of a bloke taking money), which is a bit slower, but then you get charged the correct rate for motorcycles. If you buy a gizmo, (or telebadge as they're known) and go through the reserved lanes (marked in orange on the French autoroutes), you'll be charged car prices which works out quite expensive if you're going a long way.

How do the telepeages work? Do they debit a credit card once a month or some thing like that?

I have a car journey to the Alps in April and a further holiday to the Dordogne in July/August. Can a Brit get one?

If you are riding in a group then use the credit card barriers. Line up 3-4 bikes in front of the barrier and let 1 person pay using a card. You'll get charged at the car rate but works out cheaper than 3 bikes. At the next peage let another person pay the fee.

Just make sure you all pull off at the same time, and not too quickly...

Freely lifted off another site, written by a Brit.

All the autoroute companies offer Telepeage and they all work on all autoroutes, so it doesn't matter which one you go with.

I got mine online with www.sanef.com

Just fill in the form to register etc. The cost is 30 euros for the transponder (refundable if you take it back to them). You then pay 2 euros per month fee (but only for any month you use it - so only going to France in say May and August will only cost an additional 4 euros).

Buying online you need to give your UK credit card details and they take the total tolls from it each month. If you stop at one of the shops at the toll on a road you can register and use your French debit card for payment. I believe you could call at one of the shops and change your UK credit card payments into French debit card later but I haven't bothered for myself.

I registered online on a Sunday evening and the transponder arrived in the post on Wednesday morning.

I did approach the barrier with great butterflies the very first time I used it but as you get slowly to the barrier and have barely stopped there is a beep and up goes the barrier - very satisfying.

You don't of course get any receipts so you need to keep a note of the useage to check they haven't charged you for anyone else.

It really is so simple and I would not be without it.

I once watched a bunch of bikes cock this cunning scheme up.

They were lined up, speedway style. Barrier goes up, two of the front three bikes go for it, one doesn't move, fiddling with gloves (or himself) probably. Bloke on row behind goes for it too.......you get the picture. :blast

All to save a few Euro....
