Aha ....

I've stuck some 3m (what ever its called) clear tape on bits that I've noticed are getting worn by my boots already

I took a trip to a decent exhaust specialist today. And I've got to say, they came across as completely un-fazed, very professional and knowledgeable (phew - no cowboys). We've had a conversation along the lines of cut out the 'bulb' that is the cat and replace with a standard size pipe, versus cutting a letter box in the bulb, taking out the cat and welding the letter box back up (keeping the 'bulb'). I think we're going to go with the latter - the 'bulb' is pretty small (compare it to something like the GS) and any resonance it just might make

should be kept to a minimum.
Coincidently, one of the guys in the work shop used to be a bike mechanic at my local dealer. He tells me that they will remap it under warranty with an Akrapovič can on, (apparently its akrapovic's own map) and couldn't see why they wouldn't do it with a different can on. So all food for thought there, and some home work to do on dealer maps v hilltop maps and warranty questions etc etc.
Only done 150 miles ! so obviously I'll want the bike properly loosened up before we start hammering it on the dyno ....
