tell me about your 1190

Well .......

I'm about 20 months into ownership of cato. And ..... well ..... from time to time my eye catches the WC GS section with moans and gripes - in particular the finish of engine cases and corrosion, so today I gave the bike a quick clean and a quick 'examine'.

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-Ls3WV5j/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-Ls3WV5j/0/L/clean1-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

Whilst I did acf50 the bike for it's first winter, I don't remember going overboard on that and dynawax stuff this winter, but it's finish is still pretty good. There isn't one flaw in the engine casing anywhere. At all. I've tried to genuinely find one and I can't.

Engineer ... if yer reading .... That is what your gasket seals should be looking like at nearly two years old and ridden all year!!!!

The general finish of all the fastenings and nuts and bolts is still, (i'd say) pretty good. I've not cheated and autosol'd for the photos, in fact ... I'm doing the product a disservice by bumping up the clarity and texture in the photos!!

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-hNstt5m/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-hNstt5m/0/L/clean6-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-2hBtnCC/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-2hBtnCC/0/L/clean10-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

It's not perfect, honesty is the best policy and an honest appraisal you will get here. The Spoke nipples look a bit tired, but they're not actually corroded as such, just ...tarnished i'd guess i'd call it;

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-PhH2cD6/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-PhH2cD6/0/L/clean2-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

The spokes themselves are absolutely flawless;

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-4bQ5qvL/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-4bQ5qvL/0/L/clean3-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

The panel fasteners are pretty average, again I've not cheated, If I really wanted to I could take them out and scour them with a bit of cleaner;

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-kZRZCXS/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-kZRZCXS/0/L/clean9-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

(don't forget, photos are enhanced with clarity and texture..)

The block of ally for the chain tension guide is a bit tired but costs peanuts to replace if you really wanted to;

<a href="https://gileslamb.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-FzfbSTd/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/Backtoschool/i-FzfbSTd/0/L/clean4-L.jpg" alt=""></a>

(again, not autosol'd just a bit of soap and water)

And the paint and lacquer are still thick and in very good condition;

So all in all .... I'm impressed with the build quality, and judging by the WC section and the state of my job bike, I'd say BMW can't hold a candle to KTM's finish!!

(And don't even get me started on the utterly shite gear change that my new WC Job RT has!! - the KTM transmission, and general modulation of off gas, brakes, gears and then acceleration .... knocks the BM into a cocked hat .. :thumb )

Still very happy ....

:beerjug:

13,000 miles (about 1,200 last weekend!!)

And it is of course ... on the same engine. (I checked the oil today - coming up for a year old and crystal clear ... )

Mine's exactly the same, two winters and 10,000 miles. Re the fasteners, mine were like that from new and look no different now :)

My oil stayed pale green right up to the first yearly service. The new oil stayed clean for about two weeks and is now a nice dark colour - go figure :nenau

All in all I am genuinely impressed with the quality of finish on these bikes.

Do KTM also do extreme crazy shit like apply grease to Head Bearings and Swingarm pivots?

Dyno figures for my Standard 1190S

Lent my bike to Scorpion exhausts this week as they finalise an end can for the 1190 and as part of this they put it on their dyno.

My bike is completely standard so far including air filter and exhaust and is still very low miles so the dyno result of 131.2 HP at the rear wheel looks ok to me :D

That's shit!

Your bike won't even break the tonne :D

About the same as an early R1 - about the same weight as well.

My, how bikes have come along.

Brought mine home today, sending licence back to the good folk at DVLA tomorrow, saves having to go to court to give it to them.

FFS that's the ball burst now, rasher has gone and bought one. They will be all kinds of broken and wrong now!

Broken maybe, but not wrong, I have very low expectations for the KTM so they may well surpass them, in fact they already have - it got me home from the dealers and I have already spotted evidence of grease in places no Japanese factory considers it necessary.

Went to Premier KTM this morning for the bikes running in service and bumped into Rasher!!

I can confirm that he still likes his KTM and nothing has gone wrong so far!!

My SW Motech footpegs arrived today and fitted them tonight.

They can be fitted in 2 positions normal and 15mm lower. Idea is to lower the gear lever one spline which lowers it 25mm and so in combination with the pegs being circa 15mm lower should give me the ideal gear lever position I have been after ;)

Also gives me a bit more leg room.

Will have to try them now and see if it has achieved the desired result :D

Even got round to fitting my new MRA screen

Update on the SW Motech pegs - work well and I now have a perfect position for me in relation to the peg height/gear lever :D

MRA screen is another matter - not really working any better than the standard screen - did well over 200 miles today and could not find a position that really suited. Even removed the mirrors 20 miles from home and whilst a little better still not great :mad:

Think I will try the Super Adventure setup next.

I bitched about my Puig touring screen and not being able to get it sorted then tried using my Arai Tour X helmet with the screen about mid height and it's perfect. No buffeting and I can comfortably ride at 80mph with the visor open to get some extra breeze when it's hot or it gets too dark for a tinted visor.

Not that buying a new Arai is a cheap option but it was sitting in the garage so I thought I'd give it a go :thumb2

Just ordered the Puig with spoiler, on the basis I can always remove the spoiler if it is not required / crap.

Also going to try the SA screen, which may do for general use with the Puig barn door coming out for the annual tour.

tried the small baffle in my wings exhaust... quieter,no popping on overrun... boring :) large insert back in after an hour.

Rad Guard

Fitted the KTM 1190R plastic radiator guard this evening which cost me a massive £9.24 (less 10% discount) :D

As per info from Adventure Rider I trimmed the rib off the bottom and dremeled a bit off the plastic protector for the fuel line.

Fits a treat and pleased that I did not need to remove the engine bars to get in in ;)

Hot Seat

Although not been a major problem so far I think that the heat from the rear cylinder will be an issue when we do get some hot weather.

Had looked at the Wings cooler solution but looks very expensive at over 200 euros :eek:

So instead think I will look at swapping the rear manifold for the latest insulated one off the SA:
Part Number: 60405008000 -Manifold W. Integ. Insulation for £75.66.

Plus add in KTM's version of the Wings:
Part Number: 60308053144 - AIR DEFLECTOR KIT SEAT for a massive £3.48 :D

Found some photos here: https://www.motopabst.eu/artikel.php?id=77232

So should hopefully have a solution for under £80 plus any discount I can get out of Leisure Trail :)

How easy is it to get the rear manifold off - 30 minute job or half a day?
