Starting to get a little frustrated with the 650 as it hasnt got enought go in it. Not sure what my other options would be really as i like everything else about the bike, its the perfect commuting tool apart from the lack of ooomph

Hey, I have a 650GS twin and find the power fine. I wouldn't say its fast but I guess it depends what you want out of it!

Time to trade up? Its a hard decision, I've often thought abou a 1200GS but often wondered if the extra BHP is worth it.

Im sure you have checked this but I will go with it anyway. The chain adjust, sprockets in good condition? amazing how much power is sucked away with a slack chain!

I had a 800r as a loan bike when the GS went in for service, it definetly felt quicker, but i couldnt commute on it every day. i suppose it could just be the riding position though. i think i probably want a bike that doesnt exist, a screaming sports bike but in a enduro style package, lol!

More oomph means more acceleration = more breaking so more fuel, heavier on tyres and brake components. I'd have thought that for a commute the 650 would be perfect.

How about an 800ST? Better on fuel, 20% more power, more weather protection and no chain to worry about. A bit faster as well.

it is perfect other than i wish it went faster!! its a stupid post really :blagblah

i need 2 or 3 bikes really, but dont we all??

At Christmas went playing with the big boys on mine and didn't have a problem keeping up, same with chasing a Tiger 1150, no problem keeping up.

Occasionally near red line but no problems and better on fuel to boot.

What you might have been better off with is the tiger 800... With a small increase in overall weight and fuel consumption of course...
A R1200gs would add serious ooompf but the bulkyness of the bike would be a little frustrating on a daily basis I guess...
I cant say that I lack power on my f800gs, I ve felt it only when I try to overtake while being with a pillion plus luggage, but that happens very rarely..

I personnaly never notice much difference between the 800gs and 650gs power wise.

I know how you feel, my ideal garage would have about 6 different bike to cater for all kinds of occasions. If you use your bike everyday to commute than stick with 650GS it ill do all you want to do 95% of the time!

Saying that if you have itchy feet take a few bikes for a test ride, see what you think!

Wear an open face helmet , even the 650 twin feels like a fireblade , great fun !!

Its a passing Phase :comfort But......................

yep I would agree the power is spot on with matched Fuel economy :thumb2 I think the 12 is a natural progression from the F650Gs twin but if you have not ridden one before you need a long, long test ride a Day would be best :thumb2 I never want to give them back, it's the Torque and it just feels right :thumb :D the reason I do not have one is the cost :tears

Not stupid at all many people change there bikes often or think about doing so I have many times :blast

Yes ive had this last year in the pyrenees I was with a vstrom 1000 and two triumph tiger 8's one of the tigers kept up ok the other (my brother inlaw) still struggles with confidence but he came from having two previous Bonny's the Vstrom was ok both the tigers was new to the riders so confidence was a big player :eek

Yep :D F8 and f650 not huge difference power wise. Personaly for me I have made a lot of changes and some just aesthetics and the biggest most improved ride enjoyment factor was Ohlin rear and uprated front fork springs. It is a different bike braking and accelerating! Power wise how nice it is to ride a bike some times near its limit rather than never use them limits a bike has :nenau I allways look at other bikes last night it was 11s and 12's on bike trader then it allways hits me :blast why my bike does all that I require from it and more.. But If I had a shed load of money I would have a few steeds no doubt :D what ever you do enjoy :beerjug:

If by power you mean gettin there as in wheelie through all 6 gears at break neck velocity to get to a zillion miles an hour, power doughnuts :D it's not for me :D then again i'm the wrong side of 50 :green gri :augie

And that is why I have two bikes.Using GS8 for a day out, travelling two up and off roading and when I feel I want to be a bit mental..... then I take out an R6:JB

Why not drop the gearing a bit, faster acceleration and a small drop in an immaterial (most of the time) top speed. And easily reversible.

+1 Just what I was about to suggest. The close ratio gearbox used on the two bikes means the ratios are always going to be a poor compromise.

Standard sprockets for the F650GS are 41 teeth rear/17 front (2.41)
Standard sprockets for the F800GS are 42 teeth rear/16 front (2.62)

You could go as low as 47 rear/15 front (3.13) You'd end up with a superb commuting bike with the ability to tootle along at walking pace with the clutch fully home. Acceleration would be dramatically improved.

I had a 650 for over 10 years its was a great bike in that time. I traded up to a 1200GS last may. The difference in oomph is huge. I'd always managed to get a 1200GS as a loaner when the 650 was in for a service and always felt a little sad getting back on it after.

The 650 is a great bike for knocking around on and it will do a trip, but is is absolutely no comparison to the 1200, which is also a much bigger bike. That said I acclimatised to the 1200 pretty quickly.

The 1200 chews up the miles effortlessly and the 6 speed box is a definite must have for those long miles. You can sit at 70+ all day and get of the bike fresh as a daisy lol

Wrong 650, this is the twin section the F650GS with a twin cylinder 800cc engine... totally different beast

My last bike was a Honda vfr800 Vtec which hads loads of power of which I never reached its full potential ..I find I can ride the 650 twin quicker and cruise at 80 no problem at all with plenty to spare :D ..plus way way easier on petrol!! what more do you want :thumb2

Well spotted :thumb

Mind you ... I took my lads round der Nürburgring, they were on 1100's and I was on the F650GS-Dakar and they still couldn't keep up

The F650GS is plenty fast enough ... you just have to ring its neck ;)
