Exactly. Davy, take a look at the thread over on ADV Rider with issues on the KTM, compare the number of KTM's sold, and GS's sold, and number of problems, then you'll get the true story. I think you'll be rather disappointed.

Yes, I've read many reports on the 1190, but I don't know of one owner who has had to have their bike replaced by the parent company because of poor finish. In fact, I'd say my KTM is of a higher quality than the GS on offer right now. Well, at least it hasn't started to shed paint anywhere yet.

The engines could well look better without paint. At least some alloy wheels cleaner would smarten it up. Corrosion creeping under mega tough paint is more curse than benefit

I have some personal experience, having a 1190A. The exhaust bracket and end cap on some early 2013 models did corrode badly, replaced under warranty by KTM for revised parts. The exhaust itself, in my case, had not corroded. Similarly, some of the hex bolts/fixings have surface rusted more than I expected with use through such a mild winter. That said, my last GSA from around 2010, and the preceding 2008 model (which also suffered engine block corrosion), didn't really fair much better. All are/were subject to regular ACF50 treatment by professional because used for commuting year round. Seems to be a fairly common problem across manufacturers in UK climate, somewhat frustrating really.

Having said that, no major components on the KTM corroding at this time, although have required new battery and starter motor under warranty to address intermittent/lazy starting issue (the real fix was the new/revised starter). No issues getting KTM to deliver on warranty, they've been supportive thus far, also extending warranty period by additional 12 months FOC as goodwill gesture.

Davy - that in many ways was the whole point of the thread - BMW did not need to replace the whole bike because of poor finish on the crank cases

They could have just sent some new crank cases to my dealer and told them to swap them or as they did offer and will still happen to my old bike, they are replacing the whole engine which I would ultimately have had to accept and would not have lost any sleep over.

What they did, however, was go the extra mile for me the customer and came up with a deal which I am 100% happy with. To be honest I cannot think of any other manufacturer who would have done the same.

So can we now get away from my KTM is better than your BMW crap

Never have I heard so many previous model GS 's replaced , with regularity & apparent ease & lack of fuss

BMW just seem to say fine, here have another & see how you get on with this one

Well done for getting sorted - but frankly you shouldn't have needed to & then have to cough up a few extra shekels to 'upgrade' from a GS to a GSA

They want their customers to be happy, and as mentioned by Paul, could just replace parts (which every other manufacturer would do, and nothing more ), but they are going the extra mile to keep their customers happy. What's the problem with that?

Agree entirely - really cannot see why JB has a problem with BMW having better customer service than any other manufacturer but nice to see that he is embarrassed on our behalf by it

The corrosion on my 1150 was awful. Fork Brace, front engine cover , rusty spokes I could go on.

Don't get me wrong, I think the service that has been afforded to unhappy WC customers is terrific, but it seems to have happened too many times for such a premium product. Nor did I start a mine is better than yours nonsense in this thread as I know some people don't take criticism too well of their choice of bike.
Personally, I wish BMW would learn to up the quality to where it should be. they SHOULD be embarrassed, but it really seems to be as JB has said, throw the dog a new bone to keep him happy and he'll think we're the best masters in the world....Job done !

I have no problem, with great customer service from BMW

Really pleased for everyone and probably far better than any other bike manufacturer

However, having had BMW's for over 20 years, I have never heard of so many previous models that have been replaced by the manufacturer - maybe the odd one or two, but the WC seems to have lots more and don't throw the 'they've sold so many, so it's a numbers ratio'...................well the previous 1100/1150/1200's weren't exactly poor sellers and have led the Adv bike class for 20 years

Is it just the UK or are German/USA owners having bikes replaced for mis-aligned frames/clutches/corrosion?

Seems a real shame, as on paper the bike seems so good - only to be let down in execution, for a few bods
