The best just got better.

No charge :)

You are a very naughty man Andres :D You know very well that if you fit a quick shifter the gearbox is supposed to be very nearly half decent.

An "unstoppable" adventure bike that needs something else that can go wrong to rectify poor design of a fundamental component. Deutsch engineering at it's current best?

Be interesting to see how the gearbox fitted with a QS in these myriad GS WC's stand up to high miles.

Quick shifters are a bit of fun but not really a good idea.

A decent gear box would be a good idea!
First second and third on my 13 plate GS was like a church door bolt in a funeral ... ! (In thirty years of biking I've never had such an appalling gear box ..!)

My vanilla 2013 LC would be clunky if you did lazy changes with clutch pulled all the way in, if you just 'dipped' it then it was fine - my 2015 LC TE is a tad less clunky if you do lazy changes but again a dip of the clutch instead of pulling it all the way back to the bars and it is fine. I don't think it has anything to do with the gearbox itself but is more to do with their 'clever' self energising clutch.

As an aside when the bike is stone cold (left overnight) it goes into first with no noise whatsoever BUT as soon as the oil has been pumped around the engine it clonks into first. Having done over 20,000 miles on my 2013 LC and now 10,000 on my 2015 bike I am convinced it is all to do with the clutch design compromises (i.e. very light weight pull, self-energizing thingy).

Self energising clutches are nothing new nor clever and certainly not unique to MBW, they are essentially a slipper clutch that sort of works both ways making actuation easier as well as limiting back torque.

There are quite a few bikes out there with the same system, an example of how it can be done properly would be........hang on..........oh it's coming to me.......just a mo..................ah that's it, yes I remember now; KTM 1050, 1190 and 1290's.

Have a test ride on one just to see what a decent gearbox and clutch set up feels like :thumb

Agreed the KTM box is snickety nice

But equally try the XR to see that BMW can make a very good gearbox

No doubt that they can and my old Hexhead had a decent box on it which only got better with miles :) Also, well it's Engineer, I can't resist............ :D In reality though I really couldn't give a stuff.

Mind you, if you want to see how good a dry clutch/big old tractor twin gearbox can be blag a go on a modern big Guzzi. My old Griso had no right to be a smooth as it was and was significantly better than my Hexhead.

If the gearbox/clutch was really the massive issue that a tiny number of people try to make out that it is then how come the LC is still the market leader?

I had no probs with the gear change on my 2014 GSA but it was a revelation to ride the XR and feel the difference

Dunno?

Why do you think it's still the market leader?

Andres

Because BMW have got all the factors right that makes a product the market leader and kept it in top spot for what?, 11 years if you only count the 1200.

I have had the original 1200, the twin-cam, and two LCs - all have their quirks that irritate some people, but give them time and put plenty of miles on them, both solo, two-up and fully loaded and you soon see why they are a big success.

It is best that has just got better ;)

Yup, you're probably right :)

Mind you, you know what they say about hippies don't you.................................

It is the biggest seller as opposed to the best and just keeps on selling ;)

Fixed for accuracy

It's funny that you and Giles both say you couldn't give a stuff, yet you both spend a lot of time in the LC section.:augie

I could spend all day taking the piss in the KTM section, but can't be arsed. It'd be like shooting fish in a barrel.;)

Go for it, it could do with livening up at the moment. It's ever so quiet, i think we're all out riding our bikes ;)

They are in denial and there isn't a UK KTM website worth a pish and can you guess why....... Oh yes because KTM is, errrrrr.... I dunno, maybe the 10th best selling 'adventure' bike ;)
