The Next Best Bike in The World Ever......Thread :-)

I must be going mad-I thought I read a reply to this by Andres and was just going to comment but it's gone..

Be interested in the results, or more to the point how it feels afterwards.

Might have my 1190 fuelling "fixed", not that it is bad, but I know it could be a fair bit better, just balancing the cost of doing this Vs putting the dosh towards a 1290.

Andres said his 1190 went from 120 to 140 bhp and something about midrange being improved before he deleted his post, for reasons unknown

So it's off to Hilltop in the morning .
The bike runs rather well as standard but as Officer Dibble has said , the Euro 4 emissions bollox does strangle it a bit.
It doesn't need any more power but will be interesting to see what it makes.
Nutty's Rallye recently made 116 bhp compared to 125 as standard quoted by BMW. On that same basis , KTM quote 118 KW for the 1290 so about 158bhp. So it should be making about 145 bhp after Geoff's magic. Any more will be a bonus (that I'll never need )

I'm looking forward to hearing the results. Giles is taking his on Friday, but his has been decatted.

Yes ... de-cat today.

Cracking job by a local firm and you simply wouldn't know looking at the exhaust that they've taken out and re-inserted a whole new section.
Already breathes better.

I notice the EU stranglehold in particular on easing off the gas, but when not completely shutting it. The bike sort of falters a bit and feels a bit 'sticky', almost like the fuel injectors aren't sure how much gas they should be giving. And that sort of 'ease and squeeze' acceleration sense is the very heart of lovely smooth riding. So a de-cat and remap on Friday and I'm confident it will have absolutely sublime fuelling!

But what happens when the engine blows up and KTM refuse to honour the warranty ?

At least Geoff's work is supposedly invisible ?

Have you noticed that annoying noise of a flap opening and closing at near idle ? Nutty reckons his doesn't do it,which is odd,as Premier's 1290S demo did as does mine and a mate's R.Its linked to the emissions.

Geoffs work will turn it from lean to correct, so it won't blow up .... !!

What I have noticed at idle is a slight surging - again, all software crap thats strangling it. Be interesting to see if all that goes Friday ..

The sas I had out on Saturday really was sublime, I was really impressed how perfect the fuelling was from really low down in a high gear to holding the throttle at a constant low rpm, there was not even a flutter and I could not fault it and neither would I want to remap it. It was certainly night n day compared to my GT that has been Hilltopped and the fuelling felt shite after the sas.

The sas is down on power compared to the GT and noticeable however I prefer the sas its much more user friendly and lineer than the GT and after having my GT done I deffo would not entertain having a remap on the sas.

Hilltop say (and I quote) 'the 1290's respond particularly well to a remap' ...!

(I think they went on to say that they responded better than a GS ...)

I have noticed a sort of sighing noise coming from the front when the revs drop below around 2k rpm. I assumed that they've built in some software to make it moan when it's not being spanked?:D

I get a sort of flappy noise on my 1190 when coming on and off idle.

I have no "problems" with the 1190 map, I know it is not perfect and will be improved by a remap, but the main thing is the piss weak closed loop area that is controlled by a crappy narrow band O2 sensor which limits what can be done with a remap (if the sensor remains) If this area could be sorted properly it would almost certainly help with the heat issue.

My old Yamaha was worse at just off idle, with a de-cat (Arrow Headers) it surged badly at just above idle and a £400 ECU Unleashed remap did not fix it, CJS Racing re-mapped it but the O2 sensors had to go, but afterwards the fuelling was sublime and just "felt right". On this bike the de-cat had a massive effect on power, instant 7% gain (pre remap) and a willingness to rev out that it had lacked (not an issue on my 1190)

I do not see the KTM needing to lose the Cat as it seems to have plenty of power, but very interested in the results.

My 2005 V-Strom is absolutely fantastic for throttle response, OK the power is a bit weedy, but the throttle connection and the way the power is delivered is perfect, if I could just have that engine performance magnified by a factor of 2 it would be perfect - my guess is it is so much better due to being produced before the EU regs had specified engines must run at piston melting AF ratio's.

.

Not sure how true this is, was told that the ktm ecu resets/learns itself, leaving the bike stationery at idle for 5-10 mins allows the ecu to reset, so we knocked the cat completely out the 1050 adv and let the bike idle to reset, the result, bike is very smooth with no surging anywhere and whereas before the power would bottom out, now it revs really cleanly .

So, Arseys bike, with cat and an Akra is going to Hilltop today, and Giles' with the cat removed and aftermarket can tomorrow. It'll be interesting to see the results. On the GS, removing the cat didn't seem to make much difference to the figures (but feels different to ride), so how will the 2 differ on the 1290.....

Arseys bike will feel like there's a girl riding it, and my bike will feel like there's a Moto gp god riding it ...

Naturally!:D

Just waiting for Geoff to stop pissing around with Michael Dunlop's TT bike and get a proper bike on the dyno

So,place your bets !!!

The KTM 1290 responds better to a remap than a GS plus it has much more power to begin with .

I'm guessing 128 bhp before and 146 after , but it's the stifled low/midrange gain that I'm looking forward to freeing up .

That's better
